Yeah, the election victory of Huey Long in 1936 forced the GOP to nominate in 1940 and 1944 LaFollette, who eventually won in his second attempt.
Without Long, it would have never paved the way for Long Democrats like George Wallace.
Theres no-one to steamroll the 1940 DNC. So probably someone like John Garner or Cordell Hull becomes the war president, if the enter at all. I mean its not like FDR would run for more than two terms, right?

And thanks to Long, left-wing Republicans like LaFollette (who was borderline socialist) became serious GOP presidential candidate.
