DBWI: 2014, Mosul doesn't fall to ISIS

The failed ISIS attack on Mosul was a close one where hundreds of inmates escaped and attracted global headlines. While it was an embarresment for Al Maliki it eventually forced him to resign because of the ineptitude of the Iraqi army. The new prime minister Abadi had to deal with more attacks which included the ISIS takeover of Abu Ghrab and a massive strike on Tikrit that was only defeated after a lot of blood shed.

Too close to current affairs, too close to pro/anti Islamic shouting match/bannathon.

I'd lay odds that detailed replies would descend into a brawl that would end with someone being asked to leave the board.

The Golden Division and ISF was slowly winning in Anbar before that, but IS would continue to get stronger in Syria without the air campaign. Unless the West gets off the fence Iraq is in for endless attacks from Syria and a military that has its logistics a mess.

Expect more Zarqawi like tactics to try to enflame Iraqis by sending suicide bombers to Baghdad and them to try to chip away at the Iraqi Army.

Frankly the West has to help the Iraqi Army with air support and logistics sometime soon anyway, because the Iraqi Army had no real air power and a logistical mess on its hands. Frankly this might end up being good for IS long term if it delays the West joining the war for a long time.
