Could the Years of Lead have turned out differently?

Now that I'm done with school, I've been researching various Cold War tidbits to look for interesting divergences for the Dewey TL...

One of the things I started to read about in more detail was the Years of Lead in Italy, when there were various neofascist terrorist attacks, attempted coups, and leftist retaliation.

Obviously Italy survived. But could it have been worse? European history is not my strongest area of knowledge, and I'd like to hear others perspectives on this... Could the Years of Lead have radically altered the Italian political landscape (Serious resurgence of fascist movements, civil war, successful coup by either side, etc)?

Any comments or new information would be greatly appreciated.
