What would it take for a Socialist Party or Labor like party to become a major a party in the American political field.

A thought I had (this is a pre-1900 POD though) is that the republican party splits after a civil war defeat, and the new party calls itself the liberal party. Over the years though it becomes more socialistic and changes its name to the Labor party around 1900.
That could actually be a good idea with a civil war victory. Like have the Radicals brake off from the Republicans after the election of 1876
