There's plenty of actors in modern history that make you ask - what could have been? Maybe they appeared to be very promising at first, but after one bad film were relegated to a smaller spot in Hollywood (e.g. - Brandon Routh). Or perhaps they were a well acclaimed actor who did died before their time (e.g. - Heath Ledger). Lastly, they could just be an established actor who, for whatever reason, took a hiatus or even fully quit the acting business (e.g. - Frankie Muniz).
So let's take the Brandon Routh example. Having recently read the novel The Martian, I feel he could've been more believable as the character Mark Watney as originally written. Similarly Ledger certainly would've been offered changes to act in other Nolan flicks such as Inception.
