Alternate results in the 1974 general election

I know next-to-nothing about the Westminster system, so please bear (or is it bare?) with me.

Labour:297 seats
Conservative:299 seats
Liberal:16 seats

If I understand correctly, the Tories are now the largest party in a hung parialiment. What would happen next?

things would be very much on a knife edge, a tory-liberal deal wouldn't have a majority, so couldn't happen

very likely there would be some form of Labour government with the support of the liberals, plaid, SDLP, maybe the SNP, or possibly the ulster unionists

either way, another election, probably earlier than October, maybe as early as May
