Alternate First Communist Countries

Pretty much what the title says. Which countries could become communist before the creation of the Soviet Union?

Doesn't have to be a post 1900 POD.

So you say you want a revolution.....:D

Maybe a worker driven revolt in America during the gilded age? I know there's a TL on that on the forum....

Might have happened in China earlier, they always did have the right ingredients/motivation for it.

It could have possibly happend in Latin America. France is also possible. Britain it could have happend..perhaps.

Throw out some wild cards. Hungary was pretty ripe (Hungarian Soviet Republic?). Maybe Romania without the land reform.

Probably Britain or Germany. In fact, I think Karl Marx predicted that the first communist revolution would happen in places like Britain and Germany instead of the largely feudal Russia at that time.

Communism (well, first Socialism) was supposed to come about in Industrialized states. A key point of Marxism is pretty much a laboring class under the thumb of a bourgeoisie created by the Industrial Revolution. There would be infrastructure, labor, etc to form the framework. That's why Russia was exceedingly odd.

So I'd say Germany or other Industrialized European states.

Union of Balkan Socialist Republics from the AHN Universe. I know the PoD is not after 1900, but I just had to mention it.

But is it the odd one out? The two most prominent communist revolutions were in Russia and China. All the subsequent ones (though you could argue they occurred under Soviet and PRC duress) happened in similarly agrarian states with more oppressed peasants than oppressed proletariats.

Italy after Caporetto.

The government keeps Cadorna instead of scrapping him for Diaz, and he tries ti keep troops in line by usual summary executions, the troops revolt, abandon the front and march on Rome. Italy loses Dodecanese, Val Natisone and possibly its african Tripolitanian colonies.

maybe an earlier World War which US stays out of leads to an influx of German and Russian future communists leaders and revolutionaries and they seed the revolution in America instead
