The American McArthur Cheese, or The General is named so because it has five bands, which is the same number of stars the General got as the General of the Armies.
Made in Toledo, Ohio, it is a niche cheese, only found in Southern Michigan, Northwestern Ohio, and Eastern Indiana. It gained some national attention when the cheese was served to the French Prime Minister at a White House Dinner in 1999, during the second term of George H.W. Bush. It was also a favorite of President Carty Finkebeiner (2000-2008), a Toledo native.
