Alt-History Aftermath Scenarios Implied by Media

I've just finished Stray Gods, a video game that uses the American Gods premise (the old gods are real, but they live in the United States, and their power is waning), but with a twist:

The reason why the gods (called "idols" in the game) are immortal, is that each of them has an "eidolon" inside them that stores their memories and powers; while their physical bodies can't die of illness or old age, they can be physically killed and, unless they pass on their eidolon to a mortal while they're dying, even the eidolon vanishes, making them truly dead.

This plot point is important because in the game, Ares, estranged from the rest of the Olympians and pissed about missing the first global war, is so hyped about World War II he reveals the existence of the gods to the Nazis, who proceed to kill most of them while trying to harness their powers, and imprison Aphrodite; Aphrodite is freed by the Allies after her husband, Hephaestus, makes a deal with them, that is, he creates the atomic bomb - does this mean, Oppenheimer had Hephaestus' eidolon in him?

Later on in the game, the existence of the old gods is revealed to the rest of the world by the Olympians themselves because, due to the plot's events, they've realized hiding in the shadows is one of the reasons why they're slowly fading away - this would have a huge impact on history, especially if, as implied by one of the game's characters, other pantheons might exist as well, such as the Hindu one (the woman that implied this is an American of Indian descent).

And what do the Olympians do, in the modern mortal world? Aphrodite starts a peace & love hippie cult, Calliope tours with an indie rock band, Apollo becomes a celebrity and model who receives very thirsty fan letters, Hermes turns into an internet celebrity who (of course) has one hell of a thing for designer sneakers, etc. :p

Ok - that's a little better than "Gods need human faith."

There's a little bit of that (Hades is nearly empty because not many among the recently dead believe in it anymore) but the reason why the gods are getting weaker, it's that they've been around for so long, and under so many different aliases and identities, that their brains might be running out of space - they've lost some memories, including memories related to their powers, and being immortal kind of sucks in other ways.

For example, Aphrodite has tried everything from magic to psychiatry to get over her Nazi-induced PTSD, but since nothing works, her only way to forget about that ordeal, at least for a while, is to commit suicide and pass on her soul to a hand-picked mortal - since all of Aphrodite's memories would take a while to resurface when inside a new mortal host, that's a few years of her not having flashbacks to World War II, except they always resurface, in the end.

And oh, Hephaestus is still alive, but he has been in the custody of the US government ever since World War II, and the other gods, including his wife, haven't seen him since then. Also, Medusa (turns out, she killed Perseus, not the other way around) contacted the US government herself, because they might be the only ones capable of managing her addiction to human flesh - Athena could reverse her curse but, well, she forgot how, due to the above-mentioned issues.

Kind of dark, for an interactive musical.

Must suck to be the mortal she decided to possess D:

Never played it and i don't plan to, but i read the Bioshock wiki. Columbia would be a nightmare to live in the same world as. Per the wiki:
In 1901, during the Boxer Rebellion where American hostages had been taken, Columbian Forces intervened without orders from the U.S. Government and destroyed the city of Peking. The destruction of the city caused the death of untold Chinese civilians and demonstrated the danger that Columbia posed to the rest of the world.
THEY BLEW UP BEIJING. I don't think America's progressive era of the early 1900s, let alone the Civil rights movements, would occur in this world. People would be too afraid of their city getting reduced to a field of craters!

the game itself deals quite heavily in parallel timelines, and while Columbia is pretty self-contained in most of them at least one has them outright conquer the world, including totally devastating New York if not all of the US

Safe to assume that MLK/Teddy/the Lincoln Memorial were all canonballed with extreme prejudice?

So the population of America is in the hundreds by that point?
possibly less. spoilers follow: it's a net good for the multiverse that Booker and Elizabeth went back in time to the POD that led to Booker becoming Comstock and killed him before he could make any decision on what to do there, erasing all of that from existence

Safe to assume that MLK/Teddy/the Lincoln Memorial were all canonballed with extreme prejudice?
those and everything else--Columbia makes the Freedom Party look sane and rational
Adding to that

"Hallelujah."
Why would he send his savior unto us,
If we will not raise a finger for our own salvation?
And though we deserve not his mercy,
He has led us to this new Eden,
A last chance for redemption.
And the Prophet shall lead the people to the New Eden.
Columbia is an isolated and technologically advanced city-state situated on a series of floating structures suspended in the sky by the quantum levitation technology of physicist Rosalind Lutece. The city was constructed in 1893 under commission by the United States government as a symbol of American political and religious ideals, but seceded from the United States in 1902 as a white-supremacist regime led by founder Zachary Hale Comstock. Columbia to be a showcase of American exceptionalism. Through tours across various countries and lands, America would be capable of spreading its vision of the future and the American ideal to others.
Through Rosalind Lutece's discovery of the "Lutece Particle", which held atoms at a fixed position and support by Zachary Hale Comstock, a charismatic American religious figure, the city of Columbia was created and presented at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
The Founders, believed that Columbia embodied the true society envisioned by the Founding Fathers of the United States, where white Anglo-Saxons ruled over the world and that their country served a higher purpose in "civilizing" through military might and propagating their particular brand of religion. To many Columbians, America had turned away from its divine purpose, having abandoned slavery, religion, militarism, and racial supremacy. America and the rest of the world below were viewed with contempt, described as "the Sodom Below," a sinful and chaotic world which only deserved to be destroyed. Columbia in comparison was referred to as "Another Ark, for Another Time" by its citizens, meaning the city was the only source of goodness and order, and once Columbia destroyed the rest of the world, everything could restart pure and anew under the city's absolute rule. Due to Comstock's dogma, Columbians had a very narrow perspective of American history; President Abraham Lincoln was labeled "The Apostate" by Columbia for ending slavery. His killer, John Wilkes Booth, was revered as a saint. The Columbian perspective of the Civil War is that of a demonic Lincoln leading a barbarous horde against the saintly Confederate forces under a deified George Washington, underscoring Columbian beliefs about racial slavery, as well as the anarchistic nature of the "false" America.
With the city free from the United States' anti-slavery and workers' safety laws, institutionalized racism and elitism were widespread and legally enforced in Columbia. Anglo-Saxon supremacy was widely asserted by the upper classes, matched with poor treatment of the immigrant working class. There was constant paranoia over "the foreign horde" and "anarchists" due to the racial beliefs of the time, causing Columbian xenophobia and militarism. People of "minority races", such as Africans, Native Americans, Asians, Jews, and Irish, were regularly subjugated in Columbia, with many working in Finkton to power Columbia's industry. This was under the guise of employment, while some (such as eventual Vox Populi leader Daisy Fitzroy) were brought in by force to serve as slaves or indentured servants. The more privileged classes lead more leisurely lives. This all was justified by some with the belief that the minorities had "risen above their station", and that their toil was a just form of penance. Others simply saw it as a source of cheap, expendable labor.
As a result of this separation, minorities were largely relegated to menial labor with no opportunity for upward mobility, and asking for improvements would likely result in being attacked by the City Police, or worse. The hard labor workforce at Fink Manufacturing (well-known for mistreating its workers) was chiefly composed of the city's minority population and was closely supervised and controlled by heavily-armed Police Officers. The majority of Columbia's working class lived in Finkton's shabby, crime-ridden, and diseased slums, a stark contrast to the clean, stately neighborhoods of the upper classes. Those few who worked in areas where The Founders dominated were expected to be servile to their betters while dealing with inhumane working and living conditions. The rare few that worked in the homes of the elite might enjoy slightly better lives depending on their owner's generosity. .
Such policies are widely accepted by the majority of the upper and middle class. To them, this hierarchy was heaven-born and divinely ordained. Some exceptions existed, with a few progressives operating in secret, who published rebellious material demanding equality, and who provided safe lodgings for escaped workers. "Protecting Our Race" was an official maxim of Columbia's Police, and any attempts of race mixing were illegal; public stoning of interracial couples was a common diversion during important celebrations. Any attempts to promote egalitarianism lead to imprisonment, torture, or "re-education". Torture and murder of minorities is ignored by the Founders, as well as the Columbian police authorities, if not outright encouraged. Control was also enforced covertly and brutally by a splinter group of The Founders, the Fraternal Order of the Raven, which doubled as an assassination group and Special-Operations force who regularly lynched, attacked, and kidnapped those who threatened Comstock's ideals. Their special mission was seeking vengeance for the murder of Lady Comstock.
Columbia was a militantly theocratic and fascist society that idolized American exceptionalism. Religion and government were one and the same, and devotion to the city and its prophet was required of its citizens. This was based upon the teachings of Father Comstock as a divine prophetic figure, as well as interpretations of the Founding Fathers of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin, whom Columbian belief said were appointed by the Archangel Columbia to "rise America above all other nations" in law, technology, and power. The belief that Comstock was chosen to complete and succeed the Founding Fathers' was widespread. His word was law, though some form of elected officials did exist in the city. Images of him, his wife, child, and the Founders, alongside angels, are found all over Columbia, which is presented as a heavenly place, despite its oppressive and militant nature. Columbia's religiosity appears like a form of protestant Christianity that would have risen during that era due to the Great Awakening, but little resembles actual Christianity. Columbia's prevailing religious ideology was very much a personality cult that is typical of despotic regimes.
Deviation from this state-imposed dogma was unacceptable and illegal. The Founders, led by Comstock and Columbia's elite, were the prevailing political faction in Columbia, retaining exclusive control over the city's society, government and business infrastructure. They enforced Comstock's religious and social vision out of blind devotion or greed, and in turn benefited from it as part of the privileged social strata. The Founders were also extremely militaristic, enforcing their laws and operations in a police state with a huge army of police officers and security automatons. They used child indoctrination to encourage military service through the popular Duke and Dimwit Theatre. A fleet of airships, headed by Comstock's personal zeppelin The Hand of the Prophet, kept constant watch over Columbia's skies, ready to attack on Comstock 's orders.

Religious Beliefs and Philosophies

Major beliefs held by citizens in Columbia:
  • The Founders - The majority of Columbia's citizens worship Father Comstock, following his word blindly and trusting wholly in his prophecies. As a result, they stood by his decision to intervene in the Boxer Rebellion and Columbia's subsequent secession. The people of the city also worship Elizabeth as the Lamb of Columbia, believing she will fulfill Comstock's prophecies in years to come. The Founders also worship the Founding Fathers—particularly George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin—as religious icons. Each of the three was associated with a different symbol, according to what they gave to mankind: Franklin was associated with the key, a symbol of industry; Jefferson was associated with the scroll, a symbol of law and order; and Washington was associated with the sword, a symbol of power and justice.
  • Fraternal Order of the Raven - The Order was an even more radical branch of the Founders, tasking itself with the brutal enforcement of white supremacist policies and the assassination of Vox Populi figures, chief among them Daisy Fitzroy. They revered John Wilkes Booth as their central figure and demonized Abraham Lincoln as a corrupt figure of evil. They also revered Lady Comstock, and worshiped the sword, the raven, and the coffin in her memory. Much like The Founders, its membership was drawn from the upper-classes.
  • Buddhism - The belief of awakened enlightenment followed mostly by the Chinese immigrants in Columbia. This belief was regarded with hostility within Columbia and was practiced in secret. Chen Lin and his wife were followers of Buddhism when Booker and Elizabeth first encountered them; however, in an alternate reality, Mrs. Lin was white and followed the Founders.
  • Evolutionism - Evolution as a scientific theory did not feature prominently in Columbia, but was known and marked as taboo—on the shores of Battleship Bay, a citizen can be heard attempting to discussing Darwinism and is hastily hushed by his companion. In spite of this, Columbian society employed warped Darwinian concepts as justification for their bigotry.

The Larry Bond novels have some pretty fascinating implications.

Vortex—apartheid South Africa dies hard in an invasion of Namibia, counter invasion by Cuban troops, and eventual U.S. intervention.

The Enemy Within—-An Iranian general sets off a series of false flag terror attacks across the U.S., ultimately culminating in a Neptune Spear style raid on his headquarters in Tehran.

Cauldron— France makes a play for dominance of Europe, with Germany as a junior partner, attempting to crush Poland and Hungary in the process. The U.S. eventually gets drawn in two protect the latter, while CIA agents try to carry out a coup in Russia to prevent the Russians from entering the war on the French side.

The Russian economic crisis explodes to such ridiculous extremes in 1999 that there is a real risk that Igor Komarov, a guy who is clearly an obvious expy for Vladimir Putin, will seize power by riding on his popularity. This is obvious copypaste from pre-Hitler Weimar Germany, but with a twist.

Through a ridiculously unlikely set of circumstances, the British embassy gets hold of a document written by Komarov outlining his plans to establish a Nazi regime in Russia, reestablish the borders of the Soviet Union by military force, and stage a second holocaust.

Fortunately for us, the Americans come to the rescue: an obvious Bilderberg Club expy decides to take action... sending a CIA agent to Russia to manipulate everything from the shadows so that Komarov will discredit himself.

This operation concludes with Komarov attempting a coup on Christmas 1999, only for the Russian military (manipulated by the aforementioned CIA agent - the Defense Minister was apparently part of the coup) to crush the SS of Komarov.

At the same time, an Orthodox priest has become so popular (again thanks to the Bilderberg Club making all Russian television broadcast him 24/7) that his demands for a monarchist referendum are heard.

The referendum is held, which is an overwhelming success, and the monarchy is restored in Russia thanks to the fact that there was conveniently an heir -not identified by his name- available (British but related to the Romanovs).

And happy end comes, democracy (and Czarism) has been restored in Russia.

Sorry for nitpicking, but while the general gist is right, there are a lot of inexact details.
Komarov is not an expy for Putin, he is an expy of Hitler (at one point Komarov even goes into a Hitler rant, in case earlier clues are too subtle for the reader). The novel was published in 1996, when Putin was not yet widely known beyond people in the know about intelligence agencies.
Forsyth is a tory sympathizer who suported Leave, so much of his political positions that appear on the book are no surprise (Thatcher worship, euroescepticism, monarchism, and so on).
As a note the British Royal mentioned is supposed to be the Duke Michael of Kent, who at the time of the writing of the book (I saw him speaking in a few documentaries from the early '00s) had, as noted in the book a great resemblance with Nicholas II.

Otherwise, yeah, a lot of stuff from the book can be blamed on Forsyth being Forsyth. Much of his early stuff, like "Jackal" was better than his late stuff

Thread tax: the Odissey 5 tv series. Not only an alternate timeline (Odissey space shuttle?), but an ASB bringing back the protagonists 5(?) Years to their past, to avoid the cataclysm.

Silly example perhaps, but Soldier of Fortune-- as in the ultra-violent 2000 FPS, not the magazine. Iraq and South Africa's respective nuclear programmes were much more successful than they were in OTL (with Apartheid South Africa in particular producing several working warheads that survive its dissolution), "The Order" (consisting of ex-apartheid agents allied with other various global miscreants) exists, there's still an active conflict in the Balkans in 2000, the UN regularly employs mercenaries (John Mullins, who is younger than in OTL, and "The Shop"), and Iraq's """nuclear programme""" (I'm freaking laughing my head off having gotten to this part in-game) is found out by them in 2000 and destroyed. No word on whether 9/11 still happens or The Shop manages to stop it.

Just watched the 2022 Taiwanese apocalyptic horror movie The Sadness. The premise of the film is that Taiwan is currently undergoing a pandemic of the mild "Alvin" virus, a virus similar to COVID, which a lot of the population dismisses as a threat. However, the virus soon mutates and causes those infected to enact their most evil, depraved thoughts while still retaining their intelligence, just like the infected in the Crossed comic, for those who are familiar with it. The Alvin virus, spread by bodily fluids, soon overwhelms Taiwan in just a single day, with the Taiwanese President being killed on live television by an infected General and anarchy reigning on the island as the infected engage in depravities such as torture, murder, cannibalism, and rape. During the film as well, it's stated that there are 4.5 million infected in Taiwan in just one day.

For the purposes of this scenario, I believe it would be a lot more interesting if the mutated strain of virus was actually just present in Taiwan, as the film makes no mention of the mutated virus spreading beyond Taiwan's borders. After all, if the virus was international, that's basically just C-Day in Crossed. The whole world dies.

Due to Taiwan's geography, the amount of infected present, and it's status as a small island nation, the infection soon quickly destroys civilization on the island within just a few days. Taiwan's military could not mount any effective resistance to the virus or establish any safe zone at all, as they were far too outnumbered and overstretched to perform such a task. Their command and control would be decapitated, further complicating the situation. Bands of survivors and military holdouts probably manage to survive in Taiwan's mountains for a bit, but its cities turn into vast charnel houses, as mass rape, murder, cannibalism, and torture are acted upon by millions of infected individuals. China takes all of Taiwan's island possessions under its 'protection' and it's not like what's left of the Taiwanese armed forces are gonna oppose them. The United States and China (along with many other Pacific nations) would likely enact a total blockade of Taiwan to ensure the mutated strain of the Alvin virus did not spread to other countries. In an ironic twist of fate, the United States assists the PLA Air Force and Navy in targeting Taiwanese infrastructure such as airports, airbases, ports, and naval bases to ensure that the infected could not utilize the vehicles and equipment there to get off the island and spread the Alvin virus. The loss of Taiwan's semiconductor industry would greatly harm the world economy as well, with a massive shortage in technology such as smartphones, consoles, and more soon impacting consumers worldwide. But at least the quarantine held. For a bit.

Until a Hai Lung-class submarine manned by the infected managed to skirt the blockade and land on mainland China. And all hell soon broke loose there, too.
