Create a Religion which worships the Internet. Give it ritual and dogma as you think necessary to define a separate faith in the modern world. It may be a variation or combination of creeds existing but bonus points will be given for originality

Check out William Gibson's books (Mona Lisa Overdrive, Count Zero, Neuromancer etc). In some of these (can't remember which since I read them more then 10 years ago now) there is a voodoo cult that worships gods in the internet.

Somehow they believe that some animistic spirits have moved from nature into cyberspace. Since cyberspace is more of a reality for these people than nature, they find it normal to worship these spirits in the internet.

For example there is a 'loa of ways' who is the god of travellers (akin to Hermes). Since so much travel is done on the 'internet superhighway' this god has moved into cyberspace.

Can't think up much of what it's dogma could look like, except for this...

THE WEBMASTER'S PRAYER

Our Webmaster
Who art in Cyberspace
Digital be Thy name
Thy Domain come
Thy coding be done
In our networks as it is
In the Top Level Domain
Give us this day our daily content
And forgive us our hacking
As we forgive those who spam us
And lead us not into cyberporn
But deliver us from spyware
Amen.

Hey, who said that we forgive those who spam us? KILL THEM ALL! NO REDEMPTION FOR THEM!!!

Seriously: People like to believe in a deity which was there before them. Everyone knows that the Internet was created by humans, we know their names and when and how they did it, so why worship it? It's there.

However, WI a religion rose that believed that the 'net would lead us to, say, a higher level of consciousness? I somewhere read an article where the author speculated about this: A cell of an organism consists of about 40,000,000,000 atoms, which is around the magnitude of 10th power of ten. Dead matter becomes living matter. The human brain consists of 15,000,000,000 to 50,000,000,000 cells, again around the magnitude of 10th power of ten. Non-thinking matter becomes thinking matter. Now if the number of people on the world rose to more than ten billion people, and the 'net makes enough new connections between them...
