King Alfred of England ruled from 871 to 899.
He was the only English king to be honored with the epithet "the Great" after his name.
Suppose Alfred was not referred to as "the Great". What other name should be used?

Bretwalda, like Offa and other English kings who extended their power over other Kingdoms. In fact he was referred to as Bretwalda in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, which is where 'The Great' may have originated.

Alfred the Just

Based upon his devoutly pious nature as well as his dedication to law-making and governmental and organizational reform of his nation, and also kind of linking him to the legendary law-maker of Christian history the Emperor Justinian.
