USS Michael Dugan (NCC-93575), Warrior-Class

The Warrior-Class was developed in the 2390s to full-fill the role originally envisioned for the Defiant Class when the latter turned out to be far more valuable in a Deep Space Strike and Fleet Combat role. Using a somewhat more conventional design (inspired in some ways by the Steamrunner-Class) the Warriors eventually became the mainstay of the Federation's escort force, as of 2415, forty-seven, doing unglamorous but vitally important work on the convoy lines. Many however are also seen in other roles, for system defence, flank guards during Fleet Ops and most importantly escorting larger capital ships when minor Task Forces are dispatched somewhere.

Production of the Class was designed to be fast and relatively easy in spite of the unconventional design, and because of this the class is for the most part built on the satellite yards of the greater Fleet Stations to free up the most sophisticated slips for larger vessels. The Federation Council has recently expanded the orders for the class from 50 to 100 to replace the remaining early Defiants which will depending on their general state, either be scrapped, retired or replaced by the new variant.

Experts at both Starfleet and the Federation Government however expect that number to rise yet again in the light of the small-scale conflicts and brush fights that dominate interstellar diplomacy after the end of the 2nd Federation-Klingon War. At time of writing four are permanently with the Cardassia Prime Fleet Station while the rest of the class is patrolling the Federation borders, escorting convoys and providing local defence, in short the work it was designed for.

USS Michael Dugan is named after the commander of the Human 2nd Fleet during the Romulan War that fought in the Andorian theatre.

OOC: In reality, it's of course POTUS during Red Alert 2.

And here's something I cooked up recently to finally continue my "air forces of small European countries" theme : A Bell Jet Ranger of the San Marino Aerial Security Unit. There are 3 of these choppers in total. This one belongs to the republic's Gendarmerie.

I based the heli on this existing template.

The San Marino roundel can be found here.

Continuing... The Jet Ranger of the San Marino Civil Police. Besides the country's roundel, the heli also carries the official coat of arms of the main law enforcement branch of the tiny republic.

And the Jet Ranger of San Marino's semi-ceremonial, semi-policing Fortress Guard (aka the Guard of the Rock).

As you can see, all three Jet Rangers carry the Sanmarinese roundel and a stripe in Sanmarinese light blue. The only real differences in insignia are the colours on the nose and tail rotor of the heli and the sign with the name of the defence branch on the surface of the doors. I based the colours and the fonts on the signs on the real San Marino law enforcement branches as much as I could... The fictional Aerial Security Unit is shared by all of the three branches and its base of operations is at San Marino's sole heliport in Borgo Maggiore (the country's second largest town and commercial centre).

Aaand... a few more additions to the series :

A revised version of the Liechtenstein Army Air Corps' Robinson R.44 Raven helicopter. Nearly identical to my original post, but I've changed a few details. There are 3 of these helis in the Principality's tiny renewed armed forces. All three helis have the same camo and are used for basic reconnaissance, transport and medevac duties. None of them carry any armaments. One of them served along with a different type of heli in a peacekeeping mission that the Liechtensteinian army took part in.

The heli is based on this template.

Besides the small Ravens, the Air Corps also has a few "bigger guns" for tougher emergencies :

Two AgustaWestland AW139s. They fulfill the same roles as the Ravens, but unlike them, they are more often deployed in the difficult Alpine terrain on search and rescue missions and can carry side-mounted machine guns (operated by a gunner from the rear part of the cabin). The aforementioned second helicopter that served in the Liechtenstein peacekeeping mission abroad came from this duo.

These two are based closely on actual AW139s of the Irish Air Corps, including the template I've used. I'd like to thank Andy McKay for his great aircraft profile art, which I've already used once while working on Andorran Pilatus PC-9s.

Love those little-European-nation pics!

...but where's the Grand Fenwick Air Force? :p

Thanks.

Well, first I'd need to do some research on the area occupied by Grand Fenwick (whether it's big enough for any conceivable air component) and its national insignia (can't make a roundel unless I know their CoA or flag).

Given the silliness of GF's usual standing army (longbowmen, etc.), I think giving them lightly armed autogyros would be the most fitting thing to do. :D

EDIT : I dunno... Even in the later books of the series, they barely have any cars in the Duchy. Planes would be a bit of a stretch. All joking suggestions about autogyros aside, I think they could have an antique little passenger plane and maybe two WWI-style biplanes, but that would be about it. ;) Of course, they'd need to make room for an airfield on a meadow in one of the three valleys - who knows what the reaction of local sheep herd owners would be. :D

In regard to the flag, it consist of a two headed red eagle on white with the words "aye" and "nay"

Considering the size and topography (its mountainous aint it ?), probably something high tech yet that lift verticaly would be better.

Yep. I've already looked at the flag and I'm currently pondering on what type of insignia to use. I'd prefer to use something more original than the usual cockade roundel, since I'd like to fit the "aye"-"nay" eagle in with some dignity. ;)

Brilliant. :D :D :D The Grand Fenwick Royal Balloon Corps (RBC) will help guard the little duchy. Now I only need a spotting balloon template. :D

As for actual planes, I've decided the Fenwickian VIP transport will be the De Havilland Fox Moth (purchased in the 30s to make the duchy look at least a bit more wealthy and posh :p). The rest of the air force will be made up of two French or British recon/fighter biplanes. Along with the balloons, that's about it, really.

A De Havilland Dragon Rapide would make a fine tactical transport, accommodating the complete army in one flight.

Indeed. ;) But I feel even that is too high tech for Fenwick's barely industrialized infrastructure. For the most part, the whole Duchy is still living in the Middle Ages while the world around it has changed dramatically. It's like early 20th century Andorra in stasis and on steroids ! :D

Ducal ! (usurpater....)

Yeah. DBC it is then.

HMS Shivaji
India class Guided Missile Battleship
Plus 130 Alternative WWII

At the Battle of Bass Strait, on September 18th 1945, HMS Shivaji sustained critical damage from American torpedo bombers launched from USS Lexington. Believing she was crippled and sinking, the pilots moved on to other targets. The next day the ships captain was able to beach her near Melbourne, where damage control parties were able to restore the ship's liquid oxygen plant.

It is believed this photo was taken September 21st, when Shivaji fired upon the oldstyle battleship USS Montana at the then unprecidented range of 200 miles. Terminal guidence was in its infancy during World War II, and only one of the six german designed rockets fired that day struck the ship, knocking out Montana's rear most turret.

Dispite the best efforts of Melbourne's RAAF pilots, American bombers returned to finish the job the next day, and succeeded in breaking the ship's back in two.

HMS Shivani was built at the Gulshan shipyards in Karachi, India, and was named for Chhatrapati Shivaji, who founded the Maratha Empire in historic India. She was the first ship in the Royal Navy to bare the name.
