AHC/WI: Formation of "pioneer republics" west of the Appalachians

I could definitely see it happening if the British won the Revolution, but ending up like the Boer Republics means a curtailed independence.

If the Articles of Confederation go on without being revised or replaced, they could dissolve instead. In a scenario where the states go their separate ways, you'd still see a massive rush of American settlers West. Those lands were nominally controlled by other states, but any single state would have a hell of a time keeping them under control. Virginia was the most able to actually assert control considering its population, but that would mean at least one major civil war within Virginia. Kentucky did not want to be ruled from Richmond. It had already gotten them into a lot of trouble. Even if Virginia keeps Kentucky, other independent republics might survive in opposition to the Old Dominion.

Without a federal government to check their movement, there'd be even more coming over, and the initial settlers might not even have to pay anyone for the land.Well, more accurately, they wouldn't have to pay in money. The land would come at a high price. Unfortunately, that unregulated tidal wave would mean some seriously bloody wars with the Natives pretty much everywhere.

I'm sure the Transappalachian Republics would be both fierce and fiercely independent, if not very friendly neighbors.
