As the Tin says, Hideyoshi's invasion is a good start but you can begin anywhere and in a twist it can be Korea that conquers Japan so long as both become a unified nation.

Wasn't there a strong Korean influence in Japan in the 400s? My books are still in boxes, but I recall something along those lines, with imported aristocrats & all that. You could simply have the two countries be part of a greater Korean kingdom. Did that once for a 'Chinese discover America' story.

More than "influence", except the 4 or 5 ainu that are still alive, the rest of the Japanese are descendants of Korean invaders in the isles ...
