AHC : Republican Spain in the Allies

With any POD after the 1st of January 1936, make the Second Spanish Republic either:

  • Scenario #1 : Win the Spanish Civil War, joining the Allies once WW2 breaks out
  • Scenario #2 : Last long enough to enter WW2 on the Allied side (with Franco's Nationalists fighting alongside the Axis powers)
How would the Republicans affect the balance of power? How would WW2 unfold with the inclusion of a Spanish theater?

For Scenario #1, there's a long and detailed timeline somewhere on the board written by a Spanish guy about how Franco stays loyal to the Republic and the Spanish Civil War ends quickly with a Republican victory. Spanish troops fight in France and hold the Ardennes against "Sickle Cut" long enough to be reinforced and although the Germans eventually grind down France and invade and occupy at least part of Spain, it takes a LOT longer than OTL.

I'll see if I can find it because it was a really interesting read.

If Spain joins the Aiiles in time for the collapse of France then it suffers badly, from both German invasion and the subsequent blockade.

If it remains neutral until late 42 or 43 then it gains a great deal in US assistance. If the Germans try to counter Spains 1943 entry with a invasion then they have to strip other fronts weakening those.

Depending on the circumstances, OTL's French collapse could be avoided. In Dr. Strangelove's scenario, for example, "Sickle Cut" doesn't occur and France takes a much, much longer time to fall.

That said, assuming the butterflies are minimized, your macro points still stands.

This might be slightly off topic, but what does Republican Spain look like after WW2? Obviously it would probably have lost a great deal of manpower and resources as a result of fighting two bloody wars in quick succession (especially if there has been a Nazi occupation), and there is also the fact that reconciliation with the nationalists isn't going to be on the agenda nearly to the extent of OTL, and you've probably still got a strong anarchist and/or communist movement that could make the governments life difficult, depending on the PoD.

So what would it look like politically, economically and socially?

It would be up for the Marshall plan, the US would be a significant force in Spain. It really does depend on the damage that occurred, think Yugoslavia or Italy
