Indonesia somehow balkanise after independence. I think that decolonisation is unavoidable so balkanisation is only way.

After 1900 ? it would be rather hard. some region might easily seceded, but Indonesia as successor state for Dutch East Indies seems already had good foundation after so long under control of Batavia.

Have Netherlands more assertive in retaining Moluccas and West New Guinea for a while before giving them full independence and separation from Jakarta-based Indonesia.
