AHC : Fundamentalist Turkey

The Turkish government would have to somehow screw things up so badly and piss off enough people, until eventually some military officers with Islamist sympathies decide to launch a coup.

Well, ... if you look on what 'ticket' - an islamism ticket - Ergodan actually came to power ...

Can anyone guarantee that at some point he does not come to the idea being a reincarnation of some 'lost' califate ? ... or being the 'true' heir of the ottoman sultanes and caliphes ?

Secularism did not get universal support and to this day it’s still extremely unpopular with large sections of Turkish society

With a POD of 1945, make Turkey turn fundamentalist like Iran.

Soviets invade Turkey but get bogged down in Anatolia only to retreat like Afghanistan. After 10-15 years, with US aid a group of religious conservatives takes power. Instead of Afghanistan you get a religious state like Iran (due to the absence of tribal societ among the majority of the people).

Theoretically speaking, this Turkey will incite more religious backed revolutions. Especially in Iran and Afghanistan.

I think there a difference between Islam being the official religion of the state and Iran were the priest literally rule the country and I don’t think something like that could happen in Turkey seeing how much less organized and hierarchical the Sunni are .
