AH Challenge: Much larger WWI pacific front.

With a PoD no later than August 1914, try and make the pacific front of WWI as big as the European one, or at least as close as you can. A convoluted war between the US and Japan is not acceptable, but a reasonable one is.:)

A gold star to you if a large scale land war in Asia gets underway..

War between the USA and Japan? How? I'd be genuinely interested in someone coming up with a way to do that without ASBs. ;)

August 1914 is pretty late, because there are three major countries you'll need to poke at to sort out (and the USA as a minor fourth). First, Russia - if she's heavily engaged in the Pacific, she's a bit low on troops for the West, which is potentially disastrous. Second, Japan - allied to Britain and content to pick up Germany's bits and bobs. Third, China - and she's heading into the warlord period by now.

With an earlier PoD one could change the result of the RJW, save the Chinese Empire or fiddle with Japan a bit, but August '14 is very late to do anything.

I suppose IN THEORY if Germany holds out into 1919-1920, then Japan and the US could end up clashing over Japanese ambitions in (take your pickl of the FER, Vladivostock, Manchuria, Shantung, etc) but it would be a bit weird ...

You're not going to get too much going on until 1917. But let's try this:

1. The French mutinies in 1917 after the Nivelle offensive lead to a general collapse along the Western Front. France either surrenders or loses Paris and tries to fight on in a very weakened state (see post-Sedan Franco-Prussian War) with a teetering government. Britain refuses to give up the fight.

2. The RN needs to be seriously culled so that the Japanese don't have to face the RN and USN. Have the RN get defeated by the High Seas Fleet so soundly that any assistance in the Pacific against Japan is impossible.

3. Italy collapses and surrenders in 1917.

4. Russia fights on longer, giving Japan another reason for entering against the Entente.

5. Japan switches sides, invades the Philippines, French Indochina, and the British colonies in SE Asia, bringing the US into the war against Japan.

All in all, Japan would have to be pretty willing to take risks, and Britain would have to be both very insulting and look very weakened for this course of events to take place.

POD is in 1905. Russia does much better for some reason and the Japanese are locked out of Korea. Japan decides to take a risk and grab Korea while the Russians and French are fighting the Germans, with Britain on the sidelines. Then when Italy and Britain come in against the Germans, the war spreads to Indonesia and Malaya from Vietnam.
Perhaps a POD in 1898, where the Spanish bug out of Cuba and the US does not invade the Phillipines?
Only Britain and America of the colonial powers were really a threat to Japan. If Britain is not backing France and America is not in the Phillipines, what is going to stop Japan?
So if Britain is neutral at first, the Japanese are all over...
Russia in Korea, the Kuriles, Kamchatka, and Manchuria.
Spain in the Phillipines and Micronesia.
France in Vietnam.
Netherlands in Indonesia.
Then later it's time for...
Britain in Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, Brunei, and Hong Kong.
Portugal in Timor and Macau.

Uh...he said no POD earlier than August 1914.

One problem with this is that --
The US State Department almost most had to go to its knees ,begging Japan to send troops to Siberia.
By the narrowest of margins the Diet agrees to send 10.000 troops to support the Americans.
The Japanese high command then sends 70.000 troops. This foreshadows the coming split and rise of the Militarants.
The US War Department was so alarmed at this that they immediately started trying to get Japan back out of Siberia.

August is very late, June -before the Assignation - is a lot easier.
June 1st -The Germany high Seas Fleet departs hamburg on a round the World tour [aka - The great white Fleet]
By August they are at German Bases in the Pacific when the war starts.
