With no POD earlier than March 2, 1946, make the Democrat Party Socially Conservative/Fiscally Moderate and the Republican Party Socially Liberal/ Fiscally Conservative. (Used OTL modern terms of course.)

Blue: Ronald Reagan/Jimmy Carter - Democrat (President-Elect)
Red: Gerald Ford/Walter Mondale - Republican

Lol. I guess Liberals split and make a Socialist Party or a Green one. (I am Populist myself, so I'd be a strong Democrat in this TL.)

Well you'd need the progressives / business conservatives to keep their uneasy truce in the Republican Party (i.e. the pre-1964 position) while the Southern Democrats have to crush the New Deal Democrats.

Likely you'd also need to build a stable medium size Social Democrat Party to harvest the ex-New Deal Democrats because their big government program has nowhere else to go. It'd likely need to be competitive in Congressional races in the Northeast, and hold a few Senate seats. Think the New York Liberal Party, but more successful and wider spread—or the New Left of OTL forced to create a new party instead of changing the Democrats

Perhaps a Dewey win in '48?

I wonder if strom thurmond stays a democrat in this scenario? I would mostly likely say yes. If the Democrats are the social conservatives/fiscal moderates.. The Bobby Byrd style Dems and the Rest of Dixiecrats.
