AH Challenge: An athlete president before 2000

I was thinking about how Reagan was an actor and became president. Your challenge is to make athletes more involved in politics just like how some actors run for election. Why the deadline? To exclude Ventura, just in case this becomes FH (I highly doubt it though)

Jack Kemp is another classic possibility. Maybe J.C. Watts or Steve Largent if things went better for them.


Ironically for this thread, Eisenhower came very close to having his military career (and hence political career) ended by a deliberately inflicted injury in a football game.
