AH Challange: A Mad Scientist takes power

Is it possible to have a mad sientist taking over a contry. I want a a real stereotypical mad scientist. Both nazis and communists claimed to be scientific but they where more proffersional revolutioneries.

Einstein taking over Israel don't count since he wasn't mad.

For that, we'd need working robots that can fight, or better biotech. Or Artificial Intelligence. In any case, he'd need a lot of money to finance his plans.

Or he could try to blackmail countries after creating a super-virus. Hm, that's already close to reality... <shudder>

Here's an idea:

An international arms dealer/developer hires a bunch of mercenaries to take over all or part of a failed state and sets up factories and the like there.

This sounds quite plausible.

This is just silly speculation, but maybe Dr. Forrester from MST3K actually does find the mythical "ultimate bad movie" that can destroy the will of any human being. Delivery of said movie in a weaponized form might be a problem, however...

More along the usual line

I was thinking more along the usual lines of getting power. They run for office, make a coup or just running everything from as a conspiracy.

Science IS popular today.

Well, you could make a technocracy in the future, i guess... Who know which new political ideologies may spawn in the future?

Does anyone have any comments on my scenario?

It seems like the most realistic of the three. I'm sure an outfit like Executive Outcomes could wipe the floor with a bunch of tribal warlords somewhere like Somalia or the Congo.

That would be interesting. How about this happening in Colombia?

I had a rather strange AH something like this.

Long story short - German scientists like Von Braun are successfully smuggled out by Odessa to South America, where sadistic SS men turn them into virtual slaves who they cajole into making products for them to sell to raise funds for the coming fourth reich as well as making 'wonder weapons'. After years of brutalization, the scientists manage through an elaborate plan to assassinate their captors and take their secret financial empire. The buy some islands where they set up shop and begin their own plans for world domination (got a bit twisted during the bad years, yeah?)...

Mr. Ivo Robotnik, a promising (if rotund) scientist with a hefty number of phDs, decides to go into real-estate for a few rich clients, developing islands for habitation in the South Pacific. Then one day he goes mad, renames himself "Dr. Eggman" and uses his substantial wealth and advanced technology to acquire a small corner of Indonesia and declare his own state, whereupon he sets up numerous nuclear centrifuges and attempts to turn his small kingdom into a world power with seats on UN councils and state visits to the US and everything.

Ron gets Kim pregnant, and they end up in a trailer in Arizona?

Why not have him run for POTUS? It's not like scientists are exactly dissed here? and madmen are elected.

I wouldn't vote for Steve Jobs though. We'd make the best cars in the world, but they'd cost a 100 grand and only run on a special mixture of oil and gas available at less than 1 in 50 stations

I even thought of a method too: while researching technologies at Caltech (or wherever) Ivo manages to perfect a method of 'robo-sculpting', whereby with a series of converted car-manufacturing robots and a pre-determined over-arching computer program, an area could be completely remade however the person saw fit. Ivo patents the technique and sets up business converting islands in the South Pacific into 'theme' residences for rich people (water temples, Ancient Egypt, casinoes, that sort of thing. He called them 'zones' just to be contrary). Inevitably, a number of environmental agencies blew a hissy fit and tried to shut his business down. Under the strain of paper-work, Ivo's mind cracked and he decided to declare his own state so that he could legitimately opt out of environmental laws. Then he decides to try to build a space station. Just because he could. :D

Brunel enters the House of Lords, and (late in life) becomes PM?

Reminds me of The Difference Engine. Lords Darwin and Babbage, I like the sound of that. Except the scientists in the book were not mad (not counting Lady Ada's historically correct gambling addiction).

Do the scientists really have to be mad?

You could interpret 'mad' as angry, rather than insane, I suppose.

No. The scientist don't have to be totally mad laughing an evil laugh but it have to be different. Different and 'scientific'.
