A discussion on Football: The consequences of Lionel Messi's 7th Ballon Do'r and what if Lewandowski had won it

Hello, as some of you must know, tonight, Lionel Messi won his seventh Ballon Do'r. While I doubt Messi will win another unless PSG and FIFA pull some strings again, or he recuperates his form and settles PSG and manages to put up a very good show at the World Cup, this number seven will probably cement Messi's place as the Greatest player to have ever existed. With Ronaldo's tendinosis finally taking a hold of him, his age and Mancherter United's current form, I doubt that Ronaldo will somehow manage to win another Ballon Do'r. With Lewandowski having his two chances of winning a Ballon Do'r essentially scrapped from him, with the prize being cancelled last year and this year, despite his better G/A with much less minutes played and less games, Messi takes the crown, many attributing it to the emotional victory of Argentina in the Copa America and Messi key role in winning said title and the Copa del Rey for Barça, despite Messi and the club's poor showing in La Liga. Thus, the Messi/Ronaldo era continues, with Ronaldo still at 36 ranked sixth and having a very good start to the 2021/2022 season.

What do you think are the consequences for footbal as a whole?

But my most important question is, what if Robert Lewandowski had finally been the one to break 13 years of dominance? (Modric winning it in 2018 was a protest vote, that Ballon Do'r was stolen from Ronaldo). What would have been the longterm and short term consequences for footbal around the world if someone had finally stepped up to change course, after 13 years of Messi and Ronaldo having the greatest award in the greatest sport in the world being a pet competition between them?

Ballon d'Or means nothing. Messi is probably the best ever, but his Ballons d'Or have nothing to do with it.

There has been years a huge problem with players voting for teammates and friends over other players. For example, reportedly neither Ronaldo nor Messi have ever nominated each other as one of the top 5 players on the planet...

This is false. Ronaldo said he voted for Messi In 2015 at least.
At least two of Messis wins were bullshit. 2010 and this one. In the former frankly World Cup winner Xavi and Iniesta and the Treble winning WC runner up Snidejer had a better claim.

Agree. Look at the woman side. It was a spanish player that won, yet spain is not a yop team yet. There are 44 players in the semi final of the olympics that deserve it more

This is false. In 2015 he voted for James, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. (Messi voted that year for Iniesta, Neymar and Luis Suarez). As of 2021 neither have voted for each other at the Ballon d'Or, according to the Ballon d'Or.

Well...she does play for Barcelona, who won the womens champions league, and they'd already given it to Lieke Martens (forever the Ballon d'Or of my heart)...Putellas is arguably a deserved win; although you would imagine potentially a Canadian since we won our first ever gold?

But it goes back to the confusion: is it for the best club player, or international? Is it based on team success, or individual?
