Tragic news has hit the world of animation as two of the voice actors from the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Rugrats were killed in a car crash in Los Angeles yesterday. Cheryl Chase, who voiced Angelica Pickles, and Cree Summer, who voiced Susie Carmichael, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 PM on May 22nd on the San Diego Freeway. Chase and Summer were reportedly driving home from a recording session for Rugrats when their car was struck by a drunk driver. The driver of the other car was also killed in the crash. Chase and Summer were both veterans of the voice acting world. Chase had been voicing Angelica since the show's debut in 1991, while Summer joined the cast in 1993. Both actresses were also accomplished singers and had appeared in numerous other animated shows and movies. The deaths of Chase and Summer have sent shockwaves through the animation community. In a statement, Nickelodeon said that it was "deeply saddened" by the news. "Cheryl and Cree were both incredibly talented voice actors who brought their characters to life in a way that made millions of children around the world laugh and smile," the statement said. The Rugrats will continue to air on Nickelodeon, but the characters of Angelica and Susie will be retired. The show's creators said that they felt it would be inappropriate to continue the show without the two actresses who had brought the characters to life. Chase and Summer are survived by their families.
