  1. 98 Countries less

For the record, I generated a list from this just now and the second country on the list was the USSR. So some editing may be required...
  2. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

I'm liking the new tributary mechanic. I don't even care about the money, particularly, but winning the trubitary wars impresses the hell out of your vassals. I'm not keen on the way it is represented on the map, though.
  3. WI: Hitler declares himself Kaiser

I imagine this would hurt his standing among the ideologues of his own party.
  4. The Sloppiest Alternate Histories Out There...

Sounds like the author heard the story of Karl Ernst Krafft, an astrologer patronized by Himmler and Hess who claimed to have warned Hitler in a horoscope to push back his attack on the Soviets. Calling him Hitler's astrologer is a bit of a stretch, though, as he never met the Fuhrer personally...
  5. MotF 119: Blink and You'll Miss It 2 - Voting thread

This is the first time I've voted in one of these (have tried before, always seem to miss the period when the voting was open), so I don't have much say...but, I think it would have been nice to a multiple choice vote. I voted for ndeignacio, but there were two or three other maps I would have...
  6. Map Thread XIII

This Lemuria looks a lot better than the one on the last page, but I prefer the my lost continents rubber ducky-style. Is there a worlda map of that floating around anywhere?
  7. PC: Tancred of Lecce, Latin Emperor in Constantinople

Why do you think the title would default to William? After the First Crusade, Geofrey of Bouillon took the Kingship of Jerusalem (though he didn't call it that) despite merely being the Duke of Lower Lorraine and Baldwin I of Constantinople was merely Count of Flanders before taking the throne...
  8. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

(Cross posting in the CKII and EUIV threads.) I've been playing around with CKII for a while now, but I'm coming near the end of my first full, serious CKII game and I want to export it and play in EUIV. I have the converter DLC and I've been periodically exporting and everything seems...
  9. Europa Universalis IV - 13 August 2013

(Cross posting in the CKII and EUIV threads.) I've been playing around with CKII for a while now, but I'm coming near the end of my first full, serious CKII game and I want to export it and play in EUIV. I have the converter DLC and I've been periodically exporting and everything seems...
  10. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

On this topic: do we think Horse Lords is going to give the hordes a bit of a buff? Because I too haven't seen them do much recently. (In my current game the Golden Horde took a grand total of two provinces off Khazaria before peacing out and doing fuck all, so far as I can tell.)
  11. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

Thanks. That actually doesn't sound too bad for my installation--I don't have Way of Life and I refuse to pay two bucks for any of the little DLC.
  12. Crusader Kings II - Paradox Entertainement (02/12)

Just how hard is it to backtrack? Because I've been missing Elder Kings terribly since I installed Charlemagne.
  13. AHC: Friedrich Nietzsche is elected Chancellor of Germany

The problem is that Nietzsche never really showed any particular inclination to get into politics. In his youth he was mostly interested in poetry, music, aesthetics, and philology, only later getting into moral philosophy. And, even then, his moral philosophy is pretty apolitical, despite how...
  14. WI: Deseret becomes a state?

According to the Book of Mormon, Mormon was a prophet of the Nephites and, along with his son, Moroni[1], the compiler of and commentator upon many of the texts that would become the Book. People called the LDS followers 'Mormons'...because it was in the name of their holy text, logically...
  15. AHC: Israel in 1918

Thanks for all the replies! Oh, yes, no question that the Jews had damn good reasons for paranoia. (Much better than, say, Hungarians pissed off about losing out in the War of the Pygmies.) An interesting take. I'm wondering what the Brits might have done to follow up on Balfour. If I'm...
  16. AHC: Israel in 1918

Since I'm new to the site, first allow me to issue the standard disclaimer that I'm not trying to push any political agenda here, either pro- or anti-Israel. I dunno if its necessary to say that, but there it is. Anyway, at the moment, I'm reading Thinking the Twentieth Century by Tony Judt...
  17. The Rhineland Crusade

I'm sorry to go off-topic, but I'd like to pick at this point a bit because I'm remembering reading Darnton's The Great Cat Massacre (something of a classic in cultural history), the title essay of which goes into great detail about cats and the connections to European witchcraft traditions. The...
  18. Awesome AHC : Shi'ite Latin America

Could you do something with Morocco? The Idrisids were Zaidi, maybe they could hang on and, um...something. I dunno how this ends up with a population speaking Latinate-vernaculars though.
  19. What if Atlantis really Existed?

If you are talking about an actual continent of Atlantis, then the rules of this site appear to regard that as ASB. And not unreasonably: the PoD for such a scenario would literally be millions of years ago, blutterflying basically all of human history. For what it is worth, though, here is...
  20. WI: Humans never crossed Beringia

A bit of digging shows me this old thread, which, while not precisely on the same topic, may shed some light on things (I'm granting for the sake of argument the idea that the Medieval Warm Period will be butterflied or lessened.) Some highlights: -In terms of habitability, North Africa is...
