Without Boer settlement, could the Bantu have reached the Cape?

Certainly. I think the Khoisan would be in a stronger position to oppose colonising powers, making negotiations more even, and this would likely lead to European colonisation being more staggered.

Without Boer settlement, could the Bantu have reached the Cape?

The Xhosa were on the march westwards by the 17th century, bringing with them more advanced warfare and iron weapons, without a European power to oppose them I don't see why they couldn't have conquered the Cape. In the event I expect the local Khoisan will be absorbed into the Xhosa tribes as...

    Officially Nameless Country/Leadership/Ideology

The Makhnovshchina in Ukraine 1919-1921 had no official name for itself in-keeping with Anarchist ideas about the dissolution of the state. ‘Ukrainian Free Territory’ was an exonym IIRC.

WI/AHC: Communist China in a Nazi-American Cold War

IMO Ideological differences will be too great to overcome in the long term, so beyond some trading and mutual diplomatic recognition, I don’t think an alliance would be workable. Especially if the PRC promotes the radical anti-colonial foreign policy it pursued ITTL, which would no doubt spook...

Differences between Japanese Imperialism and European Fascism?

Unsurprisingly, due to the major similarities (totalitarian government, violent racism, total war economies, foreign expansionism) Japanese Imperialism and European Fascism are often lumped in together. I was interested, though, in the differences between these two systems and was wondering if...

Spain during WW2 if Republicans won the Civil War?

Certainly Stalinist Spain would trade with the Axis. But I’d say there’s a big difference between providing resources to the Axis and actively harbouring Axis troops. Some neutral countries allowed German troops to cross their territory it is true. Sweden, for instance, allowed the Wehrmacht to...

Would a fascist US join Nazi Germany?

A homegrown fascist movement (one which isn’t merely an extension of the Italian and German foreign ministries) would I think have close links to the Anglo-Saxon East Coast elite many of whom were Anglophiles. For all that they were occasional rivals the financial, cultural, and political links...

Spain during WW2 if Republicans won the Civil War?

No chance. A Stalinist Spain would follow the letter of Molotov-Ribbentrop and remain neutral. The Soviet Union didn’t actually fight the Western Allies from 1939-41 so why would Spain? Certainly a Stalinist Spain would not want German troops on its soil especially after all the Luftwaffe did to...

Spain during WW2 if Republicans won the Civil War?

I could see Spain supporting France, though without contributing troops. Any liberal democratic regime in Western Europe will be a threat to the Nazis. The Axis Powers showed that they were more than willing to occupy neutral nations, though Spain is much more of a commitment than Greece or...

Who hurt their military more, Hitler or Stalin?

It’s very interesting because Stalin inarguably did more material harm to the Red Army than Hitler did to the Wehrmacht. Thousands of talented Soviet officers were murdered on trumped up charges, depriving the military of talent and causing administrative chaos. Hitler by contrast executed...

AHC: Make any of the Mitford Girls Queen Consort of England

Personally I find her the most vile of the lot. Sure Unity was a nasty little monster but at least she had the excuse of not knowing where the Nazi regime was heading. Diana was denying the Holocaust on Desert Island Discs and whitewashing husband’s activities into the 1980s.

Impact on Racism with a surviving fascist Italy or Nazi Germany

I’d expect a surviving Fascist Italy to violently resist attempts at Libya and East Africa to gain independence. Much like Portugal, but potentially more radical, you could even see poison gas and chemical weapons being used.

WI: Covert conversion of an European ruler to Islam?

I objectively think John I of England would be the funniest choice just for how chaotic the result would be. Bonus points if it leaves behind an area of England with Islamic influences; Mosques on the Brecon Beacons, town names like Oxford Abbas, etc.

Update for Selig Sind Die Toten fans - progress is coming along slowly. Work is keeping me crazily busy. On that note my research has hit a bit of a dead end I was wondering if anyone knew of any good sources on Republican China, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the British Fascist movement...

No Nazis but continued antisemitism on the European Continent, what happens?

Sorry to nitpick but how do you mean “grouped together”? Because an alliance between the Nazis and the Communists (whatever delusions Strasser and Goebbels might have harboured) was unlikely IMO.

No Nazis but continued antisemitism on the European Continent, what happens?

Maybe not. But Jewish immigration numbers were at a level (Jews were already a majority in several northern areas) that I think the formation of some kind of Israeli state was probable. A bigger diaspora certainly but a much poorer and more marginalised diaspora too, particularly Eastern...

No Nazis but continued antisemitism on the European Continent, what happens?

I’ll add my two cents to what others I’ve said by adding that Israel, as it exists, was never an inevitability. Yes, some form of Jewish state in Palestine is likely. But IMO without the mass population migration caused by the Holocaust ITTL it will be smaller and poorer.

Sorbian Language East Germany after WW2

My two cents is that it’s very feasible to have Sorbian as a second official language, through massive East German investment in Sorb language preservation, but the numbers of active speakers (as in, people who use it day-to-day) wouldn’t be large. Lots of villages in eastern Germany actually...
