Nordic Liberal Alliance is one of the Big Old Three of Nordic Politics. Formed as a merger of various regional liberal parties in the 1870s, mainly thanks to the efforts of the Norwegian lawyer
Asbjørn Abraham Sønderheim, has basically not changed its ideology since the 19th century, meaning that though they started out as what at the time was a party clearly on the political left, they are now a party clearly on the political right.
Sønderheim championed a Nordic Empire that was a partnership between the various Nordic peoples, defending home rule and federalism, and thus creating a natural base of the party in Finland and Norway.
Generally seen as a pro-market and pro-free trade party, they are also noted for a
laissez-faire attitude to social issues. Unlike the Unionists, which historically championed
Kontinentalpolitik, the Liberals supported
Peninsularpolitik, and wished to keep the Nordic Empire from becoming embroiled in the alliances down on the continent during the latter half of the 19th century. They joined forces with the Skepticals at the same time to prevent the Nordic Empire from ever becoming a colonial power, with Sønderheim privatizing the Nordic East and West India Companies in 1886.
Of course, their reputation as peaceniks should not be taken overly seriously. Much like the Unionist, Skeptical and Labour Parties, the Liberals support maintaining the
Jørmundangur at its current levels, which is estimated to be the largest nuclear deterrence in the world.
Their party symbol, like the Unionists' tricorne hat, is a lightblue Phrygian cap, and dates back to the party symbols of the Swedish political parties during the Age of Liberty (1719-1772). Much like how Unionists when canvassing and campaigning wear tricornes, so Liberals wear phrygians.
