The Battle of Pliska was a humiliating defeat for the Byzantine Empire. A demoralized and unprepared Byzantine army was trapped and crushed by the Bulgar Khan Krum. To add insult to injury, Krum had the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros' skull turned into a drinking cup.

However, it didn't have to happen. During the lead-up to the battle, Nikephoros was advised by many, including his son Staurakios, to not give battle to Krum and return to Byzantine territory.

What if he had taken this advice?
Hi! This is very interesting... Avoided battle of pliska could lead to a antelitteram basil second.. Maybe balcans could be a stable province, so they could had resources to try to retake italy, or middle east
