WI: Disney buys Star Trek

What if instead of buying Star Wars in 2012, Disney bought the Star Trek Franchise instead?

How would they handle the Abrams-verse movies, Discovery, and STO?

It made money for Paramount and Viacom, so it would be incredibly difficult for Disney to get the rights for Star Trek at this juncture. Perhaps the purchase should be made earlier.

There are a couple of problems with this scenario.First of all, it is not the kind of franchise/company Disney tries to but. Just look at its other aquisitions: Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. All franchises/companies that aim mostly at kids (although adults could enjoy them too). Star Trek is different. Star Trek is a franchise mostly aimed at adults (although kids could enjoy it too). It is simply put different.

That is not the main strike against it though. The main strike against it is that the tv rights and themovie rights are in the hand of two different companies. That is why Discovery is placed in the Original Star Trek timeline, instead of the movie timeline (that is currently far more succesful, so it would be a more logical choice). So it is a lot harder to buy.

But lets say Disney does manages to buy both. Well, what would happen to STO? Nothing. STO is irrelevant. Just some non canon game. In star trek it has always been made clear that the expended universe is non-canon (which is why it is often contradictory with each other and later created shows). Disney would probably let them do what they do, as long as they continue to make money.

What would happen to the movies and tvseries? First of all there wouldn't be a split in continuity. So it probably depends on if the Abraham movies have been made. In that case, the old timeline is gone and Kelvin timeline is the only thing that matters. If it is pre abrahams movies, I believe Disney will start with a new tv series in the original timeline. Not sure it where would focus on though. My gut feeling says TNG era. That was the most succelful tv timeperiod after all. Maybe they are going to accept the captain Worf idea Michael Dorn was promoting. They might go for another period, if the front runner has a great idea. Since Disney is trying to milk everything they got out of star wars (every year a new star wars movie) and marvel (2-3 marvel movies a year). They will try other stuff. Maybe two TV series at the same time (like TNG/Voyager and DS9). Possibly movies, although I wouldn't know where they would focus on. Probably Kirk.

Still the more I think about it, I think that Star Wars is the better choice for Disney. It is more easy to market.

The complicated parts of the show will be toned down and the action and adventure dialed up to make it more appealing to families because young people buy (well their parents buy) lots of merchandise. There might be some roles filled by children and young adults in movies to help increase that appeal.

Also, we'll hear a lot about the "magic" of the Star Trek universe.

Okay, how bout this?
Disney buys Star Trek after the failure of Nemesis?

Nemesis was not important. It was Enterprise that killed Star Trek. Star Trek is a tc series first and movie franchise second.

That said, why would anyone want to buy a franchise that failed? Star Trek was effectively dead for almost a decade. The movie was a pretty big gamble. There are lots of movies made with the same kind of budget that flopped. So I don't think Disney would care for such a failed Franchise. Star Wars and Marvel were both doing well when Disney bought them.

So Disney would view Star Trek as a dead franchise?
So the 2012 idea is somewhat more plausible?

Somewhat more, besides the fact that the star trek rights would be split, which would either make it a very hard deal to buy both or Disney would have to buy only the movie or tv rights, which would be a lot less attractive (and that's besides the fact that it does not seems the kind of franchise Disney would buy.

Because of its similar name and populairity people often equate star trek and star wars, but at its core they are very different franchises.

there two POD in this scenario

One, 1994 Disney under Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group buy Paramount in 1994 from Gulf+Western.
it's make some logical sense that Disney do this, because Paramount has large distributor for Cinemas, also international under United International Pictures.
also there large distributor for VHS-tapes under CIC Video, a market Disney expanded in that time
next to that Tv production and rights to franchise like STAR TREK, what is good because Disney buy TV channel ABC in 1990, so they can produce also own shows.
Ironic Disney CEO Michael Eisner worked before that at Paramount as studio chief.

Two, 2005 while disastrous STAR TREK: Enterprise is canceled, under goes Viacom harsh reform and Paramount broken up into its separate assets.
here a Viacom financial Manager could look on STAR TREK franchise and find last TV series (ST Enterprise) last Move (TNG Nemesis 2002) Bombs totally.
he can get to wrong conclusion the franchise is valueless and Sell it.
Disney new CEO Bob Iger spearheaded negotiations that led Disney to acquire the STAR TREK franchise.
only would then Disney buy also Marvel Comics or Lucasfilm ?

The first POD is intriguing and if Disney's careful it could avoid the shit that dragged down Voyager and Enterprise.

The Second POD: As was pointed out earlier, Star Trek was considered a dead franchise at that point. Disney could revive it, though they'll do everything they could to distance themselves from B & B debacle.
