I have to admit, though it's considered a Christie masterpiece, I never cared for the story. Too grim for my taste, I suppose. Still, you've tapped a great set of actors who can portray characters who aren't what they first appear to be. Kudos!

A notion, rather than a fleshed out premise....

A Study in Scarlet(2010)
Loosely based on the introductory book of the Holmes series, with the pre-story set in Australia vs Utah of the US, and the Mormon connection eliminated. The emphasis was more focused on the interplay of personalities of Holmes and Watson, with sarcastic wit helping to carry the dialog.

I'm thinking Watson's take on Holmes, is that he admires and is clinically fascinated by Holmes genius, but he also recognizes that Holmes arrogance crosses into hubris at times. Holmes is too much accustomed to being the smartest guy in every room (except when with Mycroft*) This version of Watson isn't shy about dropping in sarcastic barbs directed at Holmes when needed.

*I haven't got a Mycroft in mind...

I saw the movie in the theater back in the 90's, but not since. I remember that it was a really good movie too. A Red Death is the next book in the series and it's basic premise should translate well to a movie. No clue who should be cast though. If you need to keep Denzel as Easy Rawlins, it needs to be an "A" budget picture, considering his mid to late 90's career arc.

I always thought it was a missed opportunity to not do at least another Lloyd Hopkins movie with James Woods.

Cop, the adaptation of Blood on the Moon by James Ellroy is in many ways better than the novel. The 2nd novel, Because the Night, is also just okay. However, the last Hopkins book Ellroy wrote, Suicide Hill, is actually very good and shows his growth as a writer.

Would have been worth it to adapt it as a direct sequel to Cop and show Ellroy's manic detective on the screen once again.

Tom Hanks has said he wants to play the character more adaptations are ever made; I don't think he has the grit or the barely-contained mania to do the role justice.

I saw this still of Russell Crowe in the upcoming Nuremberg film, and something about the way he looks and carries himself here made me think he might be a good Nero Wolfe.

He must have bulked up considerably to play Goering. Looking like this, and with the stage presence he conveys, he certainly could play Wolfe.
