  1. AHC: 42nd Paralell Western Canadian-American border

Technically the challenge is met is the border reaches that far south in at least one location even if its much further north in others. It would be interesting to have a 54'40" border further west while dipping down at some point in Michigan, for instance.
  2. When viewing Nonwestern cultures as equals become acceptable?

Around the same time that viewing other western cultures as equal became normal.
  3. Uninhabited New Zealand

They'd react by shooting them. But to the OP's question, no, they won't remain uninhabited. The British and others had too much experience running settler colonies or doing plantation agriculture or large scale commercial herding. Plus NZ has big chunks of temperate European friendly...
  4. WI: Stable Roman Succession

Either this gives the empire a lot more political stability in the future even if there are civil wars because the expectation of rule from the house of Caesar is so strong Or else it leads to a shogunate type situation where the emperor remains in Caesar's line even if the effective ruler is...
  5. Effects on the US if there was a Franco-American War/Second Mexican-American War in 1865

Yeah, I think it's possible. Bismarck was trying to engineer a war but without Napoleon 3 in charge there's no guarantee that it does happen
  6. Effects on the US if there was a Franco-American War/Second Mexican-American War in 1865

Losing a naval war would have be a big deal politically in France, but losing territory would be an earthquake. I don't think he could survive it politically. That has interesting knock on effects for the Franco Prussian war breaking out.
  7. Effects on the US if there was a Franco-American War/Second Mexican-American War in 1865

What about the scenario where the US does invade with infantry to the horror of the Juariztas? How do you think that plays out?
  8. George V and May of Teck only have girls/daughters?

I believe you are mistaken. The old Anglican position was identical to the current Catholic position, which is that divorce isn't real. "What God hath joined together let no man put asunder." So if someone who is 'divorced' gets remarried, they are bigamous. There is nothing in this logic...
  9. AHC: Lord Wellington assumes the Spanish throne

I'm not envisioning a cultural sphere per se, but maybe something like a semi cultural sphere? A lot more contacts between British and Spanish upper classes, cemented by joint interests. If Wellington becomes king it would strengthen his rule to deepen the ties, obviously. Brits in la...
  10. Aside from Western-style clothing, what alternative forms of clothing could have remained popular?

I do too now that you mention it. High glossy leather boots really swagger. There is just a lot of room for very different styles even within western clothing. Frock coats used to be standard stuff for example.
  11. AHC: Lord Wellington assumes the Spanish throne

A tradition of Spanish grandees being educated at English schools would be an interesting result of this POD. "The battle fields of Morocco were won on the playing fields of Eton . . ." Spanish rules rugby. Or maybe some rugby variant just becomes the main international sport, displacing...
  12. AHC: Lord Wellington assumes the Spanish throne

@John_Smith12 Two excellent posts. Still a stretch but you have really moved it into the realm of plausible.
  13. George V and May of Teck only have girls/daughters?

A divorced man would be scandalous. The Anglican rules about divorce at the time were not specific to the female sex. Or the scandal could be 'Elizabeth' wanting to get divorced.
  14. Aside from Western-style clothing, what alternative forms of clothing could have remained popular?

With how many styles seem to be adapted from horse gear (horse riders were usually upper class), I am a little surprised that some kind of high boot or lower leg wrap didn't become part of normal formal wear.
  15. Aside from Western-style clothing, what alternative forms of clothing could have remained popular?

In hot but really dry climates, its better to be covered with light breathable cloth. It protects your skin and creates an evaporative cooling effect where you have a little microclimate you carry around with you. The guys picking cotton in Arizona or southern California will usually wear a...
  16. WI: the UK government impliment the proposal by Francis Galton to replace Black Africans in Africa with Chinese people.

LOL the Brits aren't giving a big swath of choice lands to the Chinese.
  17. WI: the UK government impliment the proposal by Francis Galton to replace Black Africans in Africa with Chinese people.

Others may feel differently, but I think its laughably unlikely that the mid 19th C. Brits would implement a genocide on the scale required.
  18. Miscellaneous <1900 (Alternate) History Thread

I feel pretty sure that internationally it wouldn't make any difference. The only thing I didn't know was is there might have been an effect on internal Japanese politics.
  19. Miscellaneous <1900 (Alternate) History Thread

Would it make any difference if the Lytton report was never filed condemning the Japanese occupation of Manchuria? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lytton_Report I tend to think that Japan staying a little longer in the League wouldn't make any difference. But is there something I'm missing...
