NASA Astronaut Group 10 "The new Six"-1975
The new Six“ where NASA's controversial attempt to get females into astronaut pilot positions. NASA put out a request for interested female candidates that had the proper college credentials to apply for NASA astronaut candidate positions. The female applicants where run through rigorous personality and physical tests to try and select 6 candidates that they believed had the proper aptitude to go through a rigorous 2-year pilot training program that included not only basic piloting skills but similar advanced aeronautical training that test pilots went through. NASA was originally planning to create it's own school for the female pilots but with the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment they were approached by the USAF to have them go through USAF flight training. When first approached about this the services had refused to consider sending females through flight school. However after the ERA passed the USAF decided to get a head start on how things were going change. The USAF knew that soon they would have to start training female jet pilots anyway. Then after all the pilot training was completed the candidates would then have to go through full astronaut training. The total training would take nearly 4-years.
