Elections for President and Vice-President of the United States are direct elections held every four years. Up until the election of 1912, US elections have always been between two major parties. Today, there are several national parties, rather than just two.

The Election of 1912

Theodore Roosevelt broke away from the Republican Party, and with his supporters, he founded the Progressive Party. Roosevelt came in second place in the election, with 175 electoral votes, while Eugene V. Debs of the Socialist Party received 13.
