  1. WI Argentine submarines torpedoed the UK aircraft carriers...

Oddly enough, there was recently a novel released that sort of dealt with this topic ... although as a 'refight' type of deal. It's called Ghost Force by Patrick Robinson and is set in 2011. FWIW I rather disagreed with some of the ideas in the book
  2. WI Argentine submarines torpedoed the UK aircraft carriers...

All I did was fall down the stairs on Saturday ... just a badly sprained ankle :o:o:o:rolleyes:
  3. Getting the Future Wrong is Fun!

You can add to that list the prediction of computer viruses and consequent loss of privacy in 1974's The Shockwave Rider
  4. Khmer Rouge alternative. WI a less ornery Khmer Rouge.

You'd need to completely remove the ideological basis of the Khmer Rouge to get there. The whole driving force behind the horrors in Cambodia was Pol Pot's "Year Zero" concept. To get rid of that needs re-writing the Khmer Rouge to an extent where they aren't the Khmer Rouge any more
  5. Japanes invasion of USA and Australia

During the early days of WW2 the IJN asked the Japanese army to plan an invasion of Australia. The Army's response was to basically say 'keep taking the tablets, you'll get better soon.' There was never any intent to invade Australia and the only way it could happen is with major ASB...
  6. Other Alternate History Books

The old classic The Moscow Option by David Downing -- about an alternate WW2 -- is written in a popular history style. Not quite a textbook, but close.
  7. British 21st Army Group with Indian Army troops 1944-45

I have the Official History of 4th Indian - I had a quick glance ... apparently the idea was considered but then rejected ... unfortunately the OH gives no reasons for the rejection, just the statement :( It would've meant that my uncles would've served at Caen rather than Cassino! (both were...
  8. The Great Nebraska Sea

The story is a fair length. The extracts here come well under the 10% for intellectual discussion rule. I have a copy. It's always been a personal favourite
  9. Predetermination vs. Alternate History

I dont necessarily entirely agree here. Certainly 'traditional' counterfactual history would remain in some form or other as historians hypothesise how significant events could resolve differently (as in the USSR a lot of thought/philosophy went into a successful Paris Commune). The real...
  10. WI US had compulsory voting?

Along with pollies in all other democracies. Sad but true
  11. WI US had compulsory voting?

The fine, as another poster stated is $A50 ... and has been ever since I arrived in the country in 1969! Certainly Federal and State elections are compulsory, but in South Australia, voting in local elections is definitely optional. I don't know the situation in other states, but in SA local...
  12. AH Challenge: Fortress Stalingrad survives

I don't see the goal as you stated as particularly viable ... however ... if you assume that the Soviets take heavier casualties in the OTL 19 November operation and also that the secondary operations in late November and early December are less successful and incur heavier casulaties than OTL...
  13. Australia-Indonesia war over East Timor in 1999?

IIRC there were 2 Australian wounded in that clash ... one in the neck, but not a lot was mentioned of the casualties, so I suspect that the wounds weren't especially severe
  14. Non American multinational fast-food and similar chains

The Oggy Oggy Pastie Shop is a SW England chain of pastie takeaway shops ... could they become a national, let alone international, conglomerate? Doubt it :)
  15. Would Willkie Have Died in Office?

I remember seeing a reasonably reputable documentary (ie probably a BBC Panorama or similar style thing, not history channel) that argued, quite persuasively, that Presidents often suffered from having a personal physician and 'special' treatment. It cited in particular the differences in the...
  16. Bernard Law Montgomery

That'd be cos they're Admirals :) So ask who's your fave commander :)
  17. Life on Mars return

Damn good first up eppy. And there is a brilliant line in the trailer for the second episode :"Hands UP! You;re surrounded by Armed Bastards!" Gotta love it
  18. Kursk Question

I think you misunderstood the direction of my comment. I was suggesting that *given* Hitler's mindset, the only way around a no retreat order being imposed repeatedly would be if the *first* time that Hitler ordered it that the order caused more problems than it solved.
  19. ww2 again

Certainly that was part of the overall problems the Italian Army had. They generally used a 2 unit pyramid rather than the more normal 3 unit (eg 2 regiments per division rather than three). In addition many Italian troops were not significantly motivated ... which meant that they often reacted...
