Terror in Littleton: How a tragedy shaped a nation

After Iraq:

CIA: Saddam why did you waste time and energy bribing people to insult our schools?

Saddam in between dorito chomps: The fuck?!
Would they let Saddam eat Doritos? x

More seriously, assuming they actually ask him about it, Saddam would obviously deny knowing anything about the whole thing. Which ironically would be interpreted as evidence that he is guilty but he doesn't want to admit it...

...anyway I highly doubt that any of that would be mentioned at the trial; It is more difficult to prove than all the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Saddam and which are well documented.

Yes, they did, it's been known since 2005: Saddam guards describe his Doritos habit

Also more seriously on that topic, if year after year the kids sent to these facilities begin complaining of abuse, kids die mysteriously form abuse or go missing, parents consistently complain or describe signs of abuse that made them pull their kids out, unrelated judges and cops caught for unrelated crimes admit to getting kickbacks from places like Elan in an attempt to cut deals, etc. and it happens again and again, there will inevitably be some consequence for these places.

Also, the Skakel Trial exposed Elan's abuses in 2002 so that might get a lot more attention here.

I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about Invader Zim, so I have to ask if the show really is that "violent/dangerous" that Nickelodeon would pull it from airing ITTL.
It basically only managed to be kids tv by hovering just barely within the line of "technically safe for kids." Dark harvest definitely crossed it. Was my favorite show as a child. Probably why my sense of humor is so dark.

I think this is very well written, but I think a bit of focus on urban/majority-minority school districts is necessary.

There are going to be clear divides between some school communities on the implementation of things like SROs and metal detectors, while at more affluent schools within the same districts you’ll see concern and opposition. Another interesting factor is the impact on urban growth amid fairly equal implementation of school safety measures backed by the federal government. The late 1990s and early 2000s were the nadir of urban decline and the beginning of turnaround for some places like D.C. It’s possible you don’t see as much growth in urban or suburban areas.

In good time, it will be covered in good time.

*takes a deep breath*.....................

Okay, I could see why they wouldn't want to risk losing their audience and the ire of parents, but what happens to Toonami? Does it become more like Miguzi? If so, then CN might NOT EVEN be around by 2007......

I think I mentioned it before but Toonami predates the POD so it'll be around in some form.

Oh yeah, it was. Will AS eventually launch?

Eventually.

According to wikipedia, Gundam Wing's first episode premiered on Toonami on March 6th, 2000. Almost a year after the columbine shootings.

Definitely butterflied away.

I also believe i saw a passing mention from cecil that social media may not become prominent/widespread in this timeline? I'm wondering why that would be, would the commercialization of the internet not happen in this timeline for some reason?
While Facebook-style social media seems to be on the chopping block, what about sites like 4Chan and Reddit?

I don't recall saying something to that affect but social media will be changed, not averted. As for more controversial websites, you'll see.

Look at how they barely react to a school shooting being stopped in the last update yet hype and hype and hype up incidents were people are actually harmed. Remind you of anything?

It's something that's unfortunately quite true to life. Look at a shooting with a low or nonexistent kill count and compare it to the media attention devoted to something with more fatalities.

Considering that the last chapter mentioned Adult Swim (sorry, Parental Block) has been cancelled "just in case", I'm sure about Nickelodeon producers TTL do the same thing with Invader Zim

I'm sorry, but I don't know anything about Invader Zim, so I have to ask if the show really is that "violent/dangerous" that Nickelodeon would pull it from airing ITTL.

There's no way Invader Zim would air ITTL. At least not in the timeframe it did.

I wonder if the internet will require age licenses to access - maybe a personal ID separate from a SSN that has to inputted before logging to a browser, and said licenses are temporary “to reduce radicalizations”. And to renew licenses, you need to write down your top 10 visited sites, and hand them to a bureaucrat who will check 1) if they correspond to your search history 2) if they are deemed “safe” of political, violent or sexual content
It's not impossible to imagine an Internet you'd need to input a national ID into every time you use it.
Alternately once web browsing cookies become a thing, a cookie tracks all your activity online and sends it back to some bureaucrat somewhere who reviews everything as mentioned above
This could further be divided by occupation for viewing certain content. For example, online films or records on childbirth or gynecology or sexual [bleep] may be only licensed to MED-#### holders, and images or footage of war crimes and massacres may only be shown by HIS-#### holders, and classes teaching content have get permission from say, a MED-### holder, and the -### holder has to email someone a letter explaining the circumstances of showing this material, and a signoff from the professor , in order to show it

Uh...no. No to all of that. China doesn't even do that.

How long will this period be going on? Will stuff be delayed not cancelled outright?

The 2010’s? The 2020’s?

Some things will be delayed and others are going to be scrapped. I neglected to mention it but thanks to butterflies involving the Xbox getting cancelled and Microsoft splitting up Halo is never getting released.

Homeschooling will not resolve anything as it mean more work for the parents and frankly homeschooling is a lot associated with antiscientific/christianuberconservative teaching so in a decade or two the american labor market will face the problem of barely literate people entering the workforce.

Actually homeschooling is associated with higher academic achievement.

well all this plan to give money to parents to homeschool the kids can quickly become a big scandal/controversies like the one in Florida

You'd have to elaborate on what happened because I'm not familiar with it.

Rest of the World: doubt that outside of the Anglosphere the american measure will be even thought to be taken in consideration and even in Canada and UK after the calm will return parents will protest and things will go back to normal (more or less)...hell it's more probable that the various nation look at what happen in the USA as 'How not to do'

You're pretty much on point, and again this is largely why I avoided mentioning anything related to Zero Tolerance outside the Anglosphere. I couldn't find anything that suggested these policies were seriously considered outside English speaking countries so chose not to comment.

Also, the Skakel Trial exposed Elan's abuses in 2002 so that might get a lot more attention here.

The Skakel trial was far from a sure thing OTL, and despite it Elan continued until 2011 with pretty good press up until roughly the last year of its lifespan.

Cool that Toonami's still here and AS still comes out, sad about Zim, but maybe Zim could come out later in the decade or in the 2010s? And what butterflies lead to the Xbox being canceled? Can Sega buy the remains of the Xbox or try harder with the Dreamcast?

You'd have to elaborate on what happened because I'm not familiar with it.
Basically De Santis started a program where voucher were given to the families if kid were homeschooled to cover the cost of it, you know to help in buying books, learning material, etc. etc and an investigation has revelead that this money has been used for things like field trip...at Diisneyland, smartphone, etc. etc. because the terms for the use of such money were extremely vague and vast that's in practice was free money without any real obbligation to use it for the child education (if someone was smart enough to come with just the most filmsy of the excuse).

edit: https://www.reformaustin.org/educat...gram-under-fire-for-misuse-of-taxpayer-funds/

Regarding homeschooling, well the problem is that the various research itself say that there too little work for a definitive opinion regarding social and academic achievment in both a positive and negative way.
Personally i have just the experience of a former friend that had gone full conspiracy nut and started homeschooling her child (pretty rare in Italy), she basically educate them on her belief but when it's time for the exam to certificate the result she had teached them to lie and to say what the various teacher wanted to ear but keep say at home to them that are all lies that they need to say because 'them' control everything

Wonder what animes Toonami will be playing ITTL, probably more comedic/slice of life stuff (though I can still see Tenchi airing). I wonder if we even get the superhero movie boom of the 2000s (which arguably started with X-Men in 2000).

Some new information that might be useful to you OP:

Joe Cirri’s wife died of Alzheimer’s in 2021, living long enough to see Elan and Joe’s horse racetrack decay and close down.

Well, sure has been a while since I last messaged and generally since any activity has been going down here. Well, I just wanted to come by and ask two questions to you @SirCecil:

1: How long will this timeline continue, as in where will it end exactly? By the very late 2000s to early 2010s? Or perhaps earlier? Who knows, I’m just curious what more stuff you’ve got in mind since we haven’t reached 9/11 (if that will even happen in this timeline).

2: What inspired you to make this timeline in the first place, outside from exploring the morbid “what if” scenario of it?

Yes, I admit I have been a bit quiet but don't worry, I'm still working when I can.

At minimum I'll continue this timeline until about 2016. Anything further and I'm wading too far into current politics (a tightrope I'm going to be walking regardless) and after a certain point after the POD events become too uncertain.

2: What inspired you to make this timeline in the first place, outside from exploring the morbid “what if” scenario of it?

A multitude of reasons really. The biggest was a preexisting interest in Columbine and rampage attacks more broadly, so I felt uniquely positioned to write about the topic. I read many previous threads discussing this POD and was left wanting. Relatedly I've been largely disappointed with how most TLs grapple with the subject, if they do at all. Secondly, I was motivated to write because of the pure uniqueness. I've had other TL ideas I've considered writing, but to my knowledge most have already been done before. I may or may not continue writing alternate history after this, but regardless as to whether or not I do I wanted to make the first I ever wrote be more original.

Let's hope that it's at least the progressive kind of anti-establishment, from Bernie-esque democratic socialism to the various flavours of left-libertarianism, rather than, you know, yellow flags with snakes on them, or flags that were last used in 1945, because those guys would make the lives of the youth even worse.
The yellow Flags with snakes are the good guys. Flavors of Libertarian-right will do well contesting this nonsense based on due process rights being violated as well as free speech. The establishment Dems are gonna suffer greatly here.

Thank you.

Hardly. Whether you're talking about anti-government, libertarian types, white nationalists, or religious fundamentalists, what Eric and Dylan did has little to no appeal for them for a simple reason: how does blowing up a school full of middle class, white, and largely religious teenagers help to overthrow the federal government, create a white ethnostate, or spread the word of God? Incels haven't really become a thing yet, so that's also firmly out. Eric and Dylan are going to be heroes largely to the same kinds of people who look up to them OTL, that is mentally ill, traumatized, and disenfranchised teens and young adults willing to kill a lot of random people.
Eric and Dylan are villains to us Christian conservatives and libertarians . They made martyrs of some of our own. We would protest the violations of due process and free speech from the Clinton administration

Very much so, and piracy of films and games are also more prevalent due to soft censorship.

The next updates are taking some time as I balance work and life, so I thank everyone who's been patient thus far!

So judging by how draconian TTL America is, I guess Weird al wouldn't publish "Don't download this song", because that would be the TTL equivalent of using searchlights to spell "Lenin Sux" In 1970 Moscow.
