I read somewhere that when the British Chieftan tank was just entering production in the late 60s there were negotiations for Israel to lisence build 500 (I think) Chieftans. This fell through due to Arab displeasure, either real or expected. But what if this did happen?

Aside from what the 120mm rifled gun would do the the Syrian army on the Golan hieghts in 1973 there would have to be considerable knock-on effects from such an agreement, both in Britain and the Mid East.

Well, perhaps the Israelis would continue to rely on British and American weaponry rather than investing in their own arms industry. Perhaps they wouldn't have the amazing Merkava main battle tank today.
To the British government, this arms deal was not considered to be worth the damage it could do to British oil companies in the region.
