No Falkland wars

Let's say the Junta had realized that attacking the Falklands would garner a British reaction and anger the US. What others things could they do to distact their populous?

Well, they were currently in a tiff with Chile over the Beagle Islands (some guano covered rocks down in the Straits of Magellen, IIRC). I guess they could have made a grab for those instead.

The Junta was so worried about the Beagles that they kept their best two infantry brigades deployed against Chile and well as two brand new, German built missile boats within interdiction distance of the Straits. That's right folks, the Argies' best infantry and newest naval vessels never even went near the Falklands during the whole war. The Junta really didn't plan that well.

One stumbling block to a Beagle grab was that both nations had already agreed to Papal arbitration of the issue. A Beagle grab may have sparked some national pride but it would have then immediately kicked off internal trouble over insulting the Holy Father in a very Catholic populace.

Your guess is a good as mine. I think the Junta's time was up, even their pogroms against various leftist groups weren't working anymore.

One thing to be added is that if there is no Falklands war in 1982 by 1992 the islands will have been added over to Argentia assuming the country is in any state short of civil war.

How on earth do you figure that, sure the people wouldn't hate Argentina quite so much but they certainly wouldn't want to become Argentinian.
No Falklands war would have one good effect that springs to mind- the end of that witch Thatcher.

Because basically the government of the day didn't give a damn about the Falklands. Given time the islanders would have been persuaded or, more likely, browbeaten into accepting. For their part all the Argentines really wanted was to raise their flag over Port Stanley. The island could carry on as usual just as long as the Argentines had their flag.

Would there also have been thousnads more ppl forcibly disappeared had the junta cont'd to rule Argentina after 1982/83, without the Falklands War OTL resulting in Galtieri et al being ousted ?

The Junta needed, methinks, something to keep the people busy and looking at the other side, so, if there was no invasion of the Falklands, they would have attacked Chile.

Let's imagine what would had happened if the Argies doesn't win the football cup in 1978... Falklands earlier.... ;)

from http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=48414&highlight=falklands

It is June 1978...in the Argentina world cup, Brazil are drawing their group game with Sweden 1-1. Deep into injury time, Brazil win a corner...Nelinho swings in a curling corner and Zico heads it home to win the game 2-1....

...or does he? The Welsh referee Clive Thomas has blown the final whistle as the ball was in the air...he rules out the goal and the result stands as 1-1 to global criticsism.

...But what if he'd not blown...what if he'd decided to let the ball go dead before blowing and Brazil had won?

Brazil wins its group and takes Austria's place in the 2nd round group A - which it wins.

Austria takes Brazil's place in Group B...which Argentina wins.

The final is between Argentina and not the Netherlands but Brazil ..... and Brazil win.

The Argentine Junta (under huge pressure and only saved by the world cup win in 1978) falls....to be replaced by a socialist/democratic government...

Argentina is weak but there is no need to invade the Falklands in 1982 to generate the same patriotic fervour that was created in 1978...

Without the Falklands war, the British Conservative government under Thatcher loses the 1983 general (khaki) election.... there is no 1984 miners strike...no poll tax ....no sell off of British industry....no student loans...Britain becomes a happy place....

Were it not for a Welshman.
