Challenge: The Mormon Empire

just a fun little challenge.

Challenge is to create a large Mormon empire in the United States that has to at least contain Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The rest is up to you but the POD has to be before 1900.

if its in the US, why would it be an empire? (or is the US ruled by a Mormon Emperor?)

why would they want an empire?

for fun? iono it dosent have to be an empire, it just sounds so much cooler

Have the USA not fight Mexico - the Mormons went to Utah in the first place to get away from US control, American settlers having chased them out of IIRC Indiana.

Thus, if the US doesn't fight Mexico (maybe it fights Britain instead over Oregon), then the Mormons have a large sparsely-populated area to expand into. By the time the USA is refocused on Mexico, the Mormons can offer the Mexicans a cadre of well-disciplined soldiers in the North (Mormon troops were much prized in California in OTL during the Gold Rush).
