Republican Spain today.

OK, this thread is about a republican spain winning in the SCW.

How would a republican spain be from the end of the SCW to 2006?

It depends.

The best case would be a democratic country rather like Spain today.

The worst case would be a Communist Spain with a crazy evil ruler like Kim Jong Il.

The quicker Franco is defeated, the better the chance of a democratic Spain. If large numbers of Soviet NKVD agents are in the country when Franco is defeated, then they might well suppress the democratic elements.

I am not so sure that even in the fact of a late republican victory the comunists could have take the power so easily.

We have tho think that even in march 1939 in OTL when it seems the communist influence was very strong, the coup of Casado against Negrin counts with a lot of supports and crack the communists after a week of combat (and the communists only manage to combat and resist in Madrid province).

I think that apart of this the fact of the soviet-german pact would weaken the position of the communists in Spain.

I think a republic with a stable multipary system (and could be the Falange and some others groups like this banned because the memory of the civil war)

Even in the communists had taken over after the Civil War, and assuming the Allies still won WWII, I doubt they allowed a communist government in Western Europe and would force a democratic process.

After all, Stalin didn't care that much about Spain.

Does Spain get hit by a blitz, or resurgent partisans? (Plenty will want to topple the Republic)

Might even waste german resources fighting the western commies.

Stalin may not have cared that much about Spain in 1937, but he would a decade later.

If Spain goes communist, then Hitler cannot attack the USSR in '41 leaving behind the Republic. And if he invades Spain before attacking USSR, then Stalin is at war -or very ready for it- before Barbarrosa. Bad situation for the germans anyway.
But I doubt Spain would become communist. After all, if UK and France let Franco win was precisely to avoid that. The communisist grew powerfull in Spain as the war went by and the only external help was that of Stalin, but there were powerfull democratic forces in Spain who would have sided with president Azaña to avoid a Communist state if Franco is defeated soon enough.
In any case, its geographic situation makes clear that it would have been invaded by the nazis and liberated by the american-british, so after WWII it would have had a developement very similar to that of Italy. I doubt it would be much different from what is now, maybe the ETA problem would have never existed, but the level of democracy and economic progress would be more or less the same as it is now. We have recovered pretty quickly from the dark years of Franco regime.

Let's suppose a communist regime is settled. Then they would have been included in the Germano-Soviet pact. Probably Hitler would have pressed Stalin to have free passage through Spain to attack Gibraltar. What could have happened then? When Barbarossa takes place Nazis backstab the spanish communists and occupy Spain. Britain would occupy the Canary Islands and probably Sahara and Equatorial Guinea, creating an exiled government there (they would not have wished to have hostile spanish population). Nazis would have also invaded Portugal.

WWII could have continued very similar to OTL, but soviets would have been in a better position as lots of german troops could be bogged in Spain and Portugal fighting the guerrillas. On the other hand the Germans could have controled the access to the Mediterranean. When the US enter the war there could have been a huge amphibious operation over the Iberian Peninsula with local support. But by that time Uncle Joe could be already entering Germany.

Finally Germany would be defeated, but the iron courtain could fall more to the west. Probably Germany would be divided with a neutral Ruhrland and a Popular Republic of Germany. Austria, Italy and Greece would also be commies. What about a Northern Republic of Italy and a Italy of the South! And an Italian War, instead of a Korean War!

The NATO would be the USA, Canada, Norway, United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and France.

The Spanish republicans very decidedly left, but orthodox (pro-Stalin) communists were a minority amongst them. That's why Stalin didn't support them as much as he could've - he didn't want another flavor of Socialism take power in Spain, and he hoped that France (being wedged between Germany, Italy and Spain) would turn Communist instead, which would've been more useful for him.

I go for democratic western style land. Ether it falls into communist hands or democratic western . But communism probobly fall around 1990 anyway.

Actually, having a Communist Spain and a Communist Russia might lead to the postponement of Barbarossa indefinitely.
