Welcome to Max Sinister's Chaos TL, the world where the Mongol Conquests never happened. All information is subject to change.

It's 1991, two years before the 7/13/93 attacks at the Summer Palace in Shanghai that escalated into World War III after one week and ended even more quickly than it started because hackers around the world mutinied at virtually all digital lifelines including those of the most potent annihilation weapons, especially the nanobots, in the infamous Streich.

The story of this timeline has also been a history of diaspora. The flight from Socialism turned the tide for Irish-Antipodian nationalism (and providing the Pope a new home and being called Patricius ever since), provided for Canada getting a decent navy, for Algeria turning into a semi-European country, for the Germanies around the world to unite, for Portuguese to go and marry native in Africa and for even more Italians turning to Libya. The descent of the German Commonwealth into an authoritarian "technocracy" led to a sizable German diaspora all over former Roman Atlantis and ever since remained a thorn in Martinsburg's flesh even after the Germans returned to democracy in the 1980s.

But all these examples pale in comparison to the Nipponese diaspora. After World War I, Choong and Nippon argued over the fate of Korea that used to be a Novorossiyan protectorate. With the invention of cruise missiles and modern rockets, Choong turned the tide from the initial stalemate into a full-scale invasion and vassalization of Nippon by the late 1920s. Very many Nipponese were so pissed about it that they left for greener pastures and the number turned into more than a few millions. They're spread all over the world, but mostly reside in other Pacific-bordering nations, especially in the Canadian Commonwealth, but also in the Tirs and all over Atlantis.

Yet a majority of them lives in Southeast Asia where they occupied the usual suspects of niches that the Chinese would have filled in any other timeline. But here they are as well, in the Philippines. It helps that the Choonks and Nipponese usually live in different regions of Macronesia because they do play out their hostilities: in the oceans. Nipponese make for the only sizable non-Red pirates and are especially ruthless, as long as you're a Choonk.

Excerpt from the school textbook Building a Nation: Canadian History Pre-Confederation:

Arrival of the Icelanders

In March of 1875, the Mount Askja volcano in Iceland erupted. This greatly exacerbated the harsh environmental and economic problems facing of the island, and the decision was made to evacuate the entire Icelandic Nation to a new home elsewhere.

In need of settlers for the vast western expanse of the federation, the Governor General of Canada, Lord Dufferin, offered to the Icelanders all the land between the Lakes Winnipeg and Manitoba for a new home, provided they each take an oath of loyalty to Canada and the Crown. About 78% of Icelanders accepted this offer and settled down. Thanks to government assistance in acquiring adequate clothing, medical supplies, and housing suitable for the winters, the displaced Icelandic people thrived.

The land grant was soon expanded to include all the lands between the extreme southern point of Lake Winnipeg due west to Lake Manitoba on the southern end, and the extreme northern point of Lake Winnipeg due west to Cedar Lake on the northern end.

On August 1st, 1880, New Iceland became a province of Canada. Icelandic was made the third official language alongside French and English.
The following map shows the movement of the Icelanders from their native island to their new home in North America:

2014- The Two Hungaries
During the last century, political polarization led to several World Wars. Following the ultimate destruction of the Far Right, it seemed a new war between the Far Left and moderate groups must surely come. It never did, and the status quo established at the end of the Third World War (1952) held steady.

In the states of the Fifth International, eventual union seems likely. Russian is by far the most common first and second language, being taught as part of the core curriculum in every part of the alliance. Additionally, non-Cyrillic alphabets have almost entirely disappeared, with the last officially sanctioned instance being the Latinate version of Vlach. It is easy to work outside of your home country, and the entire alliance uses a single monetary system, consisting of the Dzengi which is equal to 1000 Kopeks. Despite this, inter-member migration is actually very slow and unnoteworthy as compared to the West. Even in a nearly classless and more and more monocultural society, a great deal of pride is awarded to one's homeland- and other then the view, it's not like living in Moscow is any better then living in Krakow or Sofia.

In the states of the London Pact, nationalism is still a problem. Whilst English is quite common, French and Spanish occasionally surpass them in number of speakers and there is no real lingua franca. The foremost members, being France, Britain, the United States, and India often quarrel for the right to be top dog. This hasn't lead to a real war yet, but proxy conflicts between members in Africa and South America are quite common. Lately, in some states such as Germany and the Arab Union, sentiments have been driven towards the Left, and recently the alliance-wide ban against Communist parties has been redacted in a few places. Some political analysts predict a rise in reactionary sentiments due to this, perhaps leading to a renewed conflict with the East- one which would probably be lost.

Nowhere is this collapse of the past system more evident then in Hungary, where the border walls between the Federal Republic of Hungary in the West and the Soviet Socialist Republic of Székelyföld in the East has finally been torn down and a surge of migrants has passed in both directions. Over 15,000 Székler born people have entered the Federal Republic, whilst nearly 8,000 Hungarian born people have entered the SSR. Some 36,000 Magyars from both countries have entered other neighboring states in the past 2 years since the opening of the border. Many of these are Federal Republic rightists, who fear eventual union between the two states and have thus fled further into the Pact. The reverse is also true, with some hardcore leftists leaving the SSR for the CUSSR- although a great deal are also leaving for university, keeping with the trends of the last several decades.

--The two numbers are approximations of the number of people from the Federal Republic and SSR to have migrated there in the last 2 years. The red line is TTL's equivalent of the Iron Curtain. This map took only about 2 and a half hours to make, and the most time consuming part was creating the Сз letter, followed by the writeup. The font used for everything else was New Athena Unicode.

Germans have a long history in the Kingdom of Afghanistan, going back almost a hundred years to the Interbellum when King Amanullah Khan's economic reforms required educated advisers, overseers and administrators. At the time Afghanistan was stuck between a rock and a hard place - the Soviet Union in Central Asia and the British Empire in India - and despite initial friendliness between Amanullah Khan and Chairman Lenin, Amanullah was soon disillusioned with the Soviet's utopia due to increasing persecution of Muslims under Stalin. Convinced that if Afghanistan was going to get foreign help and investment it should come from a country not interest in Afghanistan's subservience or conquest, Amanullah turned to Germany. Though recently defeated, Germany was still an economic powerhouse and a highly industrial nation with an effective and advanced military tradition. Due to the recent deconstruction of its empire and armed forces, it also posed no reasonable threat to Afghanistan.

Amanullah Khan had long been a friend to Germany, once advocating Afghanistan joining the First World War on their side, though this suggestion was rejected by his father, Habibullah Khan. He used this fact to garner support for his newly-independent kingdom, sparking the beginning of numerous industrial and infrastructure projects including the building of a national rail network, paving roads, the construction of oil fields in northern Afghanistan, and numerous mining and agricultural projects. Additionally hundreds of German officers came to Afghanistan to help reform the armed forces, advise the government, and teach in military academies - reportedly even tutoring Amanullah Khan and other members of the royal family.

Though Afghanistan did not side with Germany during the Second World War, their connection with Germany continued on into the Cold War era. Many Germans who were deported from territories in the east - which had been annexed by the Soviet Union and Poland - migrated to Afghanistan rather than West or East Germany, due to their belief that both were puppets of different powers.

Following its annexation of various Princely States and the North-West Frontier Province during the break up of British India, and the population explosion brought on by the Green Revolution, Afghanistan's population has exploded to over 98,000,000 by 2014. Though people of German descent make up only about 580,000 of that - only 0.5% of the population - they are still the largest European ethnic group in Afghanistan by far. Most of the current German inhabitants are descended from the advisors and administrators that migrated to Afghanistan during the Interbellum, but recently German immigration has increased due to Afghanistan's popularity as a retirement destination, and due to immigration restrictions being relaxed for foreign workers working on the Helmand Valley Irrigation Project.
