Hieronymus had just succeeded Hiero II who had strongly resisted Carthaginian influence, but in his short reign, Hieronymus seemed set to depart from this stance and to seize upon the recent Battle of Cannae and abandon Syracuse's alliance with Rome for one with Carthage. If he is not assassinated, would Syracuse still join the Carthaginian camp? What are the consequences for the ongoing Third Punic War?

EDIT: Second Punic War, sorry

I think they would, though I'm not sure how successful it would be. In the event that it is successful, I vaguely remember a deal with Syracuse and Carthage that Syracuse would get Sicily in the event of a successful revolt at the wars end. Though I presume the Carthaginians would still want Lilybaeum.

Absolutely right Slydessertfox,

Lilybaeum is too well strategically located to be abandoned by the Carthagenians. The Syracusans should remain neutrual...
