AHC: American Iceland?

Just an interesting thought that popped up while I was messing around on Google Maps(or rather, to be more exact, NOAA's SolCalc app which uses Google Maps).

IOTL, Iceland used to have a fairly significant American presence during the Cold War era and some of that remains today. However, it is possible that Iceland could have, at any point, become a special territory a la Puerto Rico, or even something more?

Bonus points if the POD is after the Civil War. :D

Fairly simple just have the US keep it after WWII. Perhaps if D-Day fails and the Soviets get farther west and thus Iceland's needed as a base.

What about some sort of Danish-American War, similar to the Spanish-American War? Perhaps, for one reason or another, the United States is more northernly focused, and American merchants dominate the Icelandic fish markets. Then, during an Icelandic rebellion against Danish rule, an American ship blows up in Reykjavik harbour. This leads to an American declaration of war and the conquest of Greenland, Iceland and the few Danish territories in the Caribbean.

I just had a vision of an independent New England fighting a naval war with Denmark. This is a brilliant TL idea.

I had an idea for a Danish-American War in an ASB TL I never bothered putting on the site (and probably never will), it involved

[FONT=&quot]a king with bad eyesight, a translation error, a rude Danish ambassador, the secretary of state’s wife, a venereal disease, a slightly insane president, an overzealous navy department, a drunk Danish fisherman, an arrogant American naval captain, a poorly phrased ultimatum, a minor constitutional loophole, an apathetic congress, and a dispute over dairy tariffs

(look it was the first TL I ever wrote before I joined this site)

Thing is, Iceland has a native population, who were occasionally hostile to American presence in their country and had no reason to accept annexation by a foreign power. (And I can't see postwar America just up and colonizing a hostile population.) You'd need a serious surge of pro-American feeling in Iceland, and a lot of cultural exchange, before Iceland could become a state or anything.

If there's a way to get the Nazis to take Iceland and have the Americans liberate them, that could be a start.
Keep in mind that that hostility came because some socialists lie to incite a riot.

That was actually my idea, sort of. Maybe a Southern Victory TL, where the CSA have annexed Cuba and the Dominican and Puerto Rico. Then the USA gets into a war with the Danes over their northern colonies under a centralizing, authoritarian Neo-Federalist president (sort of an American Bismark), which extends into greater and great hostility with Britain, eventually leading to a Great War in America :D
