Well, this is the election of 1888.
Just remember that Alfred Mahan prevented the CSA from building the Nicaragua Canal (Which did eventually get built in 1962.) Democratic Nomination President: Alfred Thayer Mahan, of New York Vice-President: Thomas Brackett Reed, of Maine Socialist Nomination President: Simon Wing, of Maine Vice-President: Charles Matchett, of Massachusetts Republican Nomination President: John Sherman, of Ohio Vice-President: Albert Hounsome, of California

Much as I like the Republicans and Sherman I had to go with Mahan. After Blaine he was the first President (and first ever Democrat one) to stand up to the Rebels and Brits by opposing the construction of the Nicaragua Canal. That would have been bad for us and worse for the Nicaraguans.
