AHC: "German Austria" survives

How might Austria keep its German-speaking territories in Bohemia and Moravia, and how would this affect German-Austrian relations?

You would have to have the Czechoslovaks completely weak and the Austrians really strong. Either way, its not happening, the League of Nations is going to give the land to Czechoslovakia either way.

They never controlled those territories to begin with –*"German Austria" claimed them, but that was all.

Well they did - before the Empire collapsed. I'm not suggesting that German Austria was ever actually a legitimate country. The point of this thread is to make it so it is.

The only way I can see this happening would be for some kind of rump Austria --*comprising, say, German and Czech lands plus Slovenia and Trieste -- surviving.

Give the Czech language equal status with German across all of 'Austria', and genuinely make the Czechs equal partners in the empire, at some point around the middle of the 19th century: Maybe in the aftermath of the 1848 unrest?

Actually, I don't think you even have to go that far. Austria was plenty willing to turn the Dual Monarchy into a Triple one. The Hungarians just didn't want to share power. Have WW1 more-or-less play out as it did, but don't have the Hapsburgs removed from Austria proper. Hungary is gone, the Austrians offer the Czechs equal status, and everything afforded to it, and you have a surviving Dual Monarchy...

Of Austria & Bohemia.
