WI-Illinois becomes one of the most conservative states in the Union

What would be the effects on the economy if the state government was Republican and congress was guaranteed two extra Republican senators?

It means that Illinois doesn't have a coast.

Yeah, that's a possibility. But with Chicago, that's a challenge.

Unless Chicago is nuked, this is hard. But not as hard as we think. Avoid the Daleys, and get some really incompetent Mayors in there. Chicago declines like Detroit did.

But Michigan is still a pretty safe Democrat state. Not as strongly so as Illinois, but still...

Get rid of Chicago's influence without a nuke? Easy enough.

A high powered strain of Spanish Influenza sweeps the nation after a long, more bitter WWI in which many more men go overseas earlier and for a longer period of time than OTL. Chicago is hit incredibly hard. The wealthy flee the city as people drop dead by the hundreds and take the vast bulk of the money with them. Chicago is utterly gutted as a major city. Like Memphis, Tennessee with the Yellow Fever, it never fully recovers and thus never becomes the major powerhouse of the state as it is today.

John Alexander Dowie (a Christian revivalist) stays in Chicago and The city of Zion is never founded. The corruption never occurs or is seriously weakened. As a result the Daleys don't come to power. Chicago is still a Democrat city but has a significant conservative base as well which is bolstered by minorities. Illinois ittl looks much like Indiana otl
