Principality of Monaco, 1910.
The economy of the state is almost entirely based on gambling, and the majority of the people employed in the local Casino are of French nationality. Because of this, the local Monegasque are largely unemployed, being banned from the aforementioned business. But this isn't the only concern of the Principality's subjects: Prince Albert I is an absolute ruler, who uses the state's finances as they were his.
In March 1910, a delegation of the subjects delivered an ultimatum to the Prince. It called for a constitution, a Parliament, the separation between the finances of the Prince and those of the Principality, and the end of French control over gambling. This ultimatum originally had to include only the first 2 points, but the intransigent stance of the local population and the resident Italians made the subjects favour the hardline approach.
The Prince refused. Soon, an angry mob gathered outside the Palace, managing to defeat the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince that was stationed there, thanks to their sheer numbers. Albert I was sentenced to death by a people's jury and shot (April 12, 1910), while the other members of the princely house fled to France, requesting the help of the local government.
However, the strongly republican government did not ever consider the option of helping the Grimaldi house, instead splitting between those who wanted to establish diplomatic relations with the republican government and those who wanted to annex Monaco. On April 27, 1910, the remnants of the Grimaldi house departed for Italy, the land of their ancestors.
If someone knows what option would the French government take, and what was the political alignment of Monaco's people at the time, please tell me. Also, this is my first TL, so be lenient...
