Melting Pot

The Challenge
Create a map showing ethnic, racial or national heritage in a "nation of immigrants".

The Restrictions
Technically every nation's population are the descendants of immigrants, but this round's challenge concerns a nation whose population is made up mostly of immigrants or the descendants of people who immigrated within recent history, like the USA in OTL.

The immigrants in question should come from a variety of different nations, rather than just one country - the idea is for the "nation of immigrants" to be diverse.

There are no restrictions on when or where the map can be set. Future maps are allowed, but try to keep implausibility to a minimum in all cases.

You do not need to show the entire nation - you may show a region, a single state or province, or even a single city if you so desire. Similarly you may show the ethnic, racial and national heritage of the nation in question and every neighbouring state, or every country on the continent and so forth.

If you're not sure your map idea meets these restrictions or if you have any other questions, please feel free to message me.

This round shall finish on Saturday the 4th of June.

!THIS THREAD IS FOR POSTING OF ENTRIES ONLY!

Any discussion must take place in the main thread. If you post anything other than a map entry (or a description accompanying a map entry) in this thread then you will be asked to delete the post. If you refuse to delete the post, post something that is clearly disruptive or malicious, or post spam then you may be disqualified from entering in this round of MotF and you may be reported to the board's moderators.

The latest census data from the Republic of Texas reflects the nation's diverse cultural heritage. This map illustrates each county's largest ancestral group as reported in the census.

The supranational entities of the United Democratic Nations and the Eastern Political Front had dominated humanity's politics for the better part of a century prior to the inception of the FTL travel*. Due to their governance over extra-solar colonization, the changing nature of possible war between the two alliances, and the rapidly ballooning human population off-Earth, it was only a matter of time until they seized full control, dividing the Earth in two (politically that is).

Cauldron Sector is a unique one in human space. It contains the highest concentration of habitable planets** within known space. As such, it had been settled by a wide variety of nations prior to the Supranational Takeover. The only location in human space with a greater variety of cultures and peoples is Earth herself.

*Its slow-ish, travel across Human Space would take about a year, still, this is at a rate several hundred times that of the speed of light.
**An officially certified habitable planet has all of the following criteria
-Physical Characteristics within 10% of Earth Norms (Gravity, Water-Land Surface Area Ratio, Atmospheric Composition, Average Temperature)
-Native Life
-No Immediately Threatening Conditions (E.G. Prevalent Super Volcano, Frequent Meteor Storms, ect.)

This is a map taken from a middle school textbook published in 1989, based on the 1987 US census:
jsaetnish1987.png

The map is based roughly on ideas from this thread.

ITTL the USA and English/the UK remained enemies for a much longer time, and didn't reconcile until the late 1860s. In the meantime immigration from Britain was severely restricted (by both sides), and the USA instead looked to France as an ally. A large influx of German settlers arrived in the early-mid 19th century due to famine, a failed liberal revolution and the political turmoil that followed and regular warfare. It slowed down eventually, but kept going until the mid 20th century when Europe stabilised and became a much nicer place to live. Due to this America had a very different linguistic development from OTL, and in 1934 congress officially declared that American was its own language, and not a series of heavy English dialects. What followed was two major linguistic reforms, the last of which took place as late as 1979 and was called the Great Spelling Reform (Graut Spiling Reform) and was an attempt to standardise phonetic spelling in the relatively young language, with mixed results.

The USA, or rather the JSA as it became known in Amerikan after the reform, didn't expand as much as it did OTL, and some states never formed or were formed in very different forms. Texas (Techas, pronounced something like Tuh-ch-as, where ch is like in the German, like Bach) never became an independent republic and was partitioned in a war with Mexico, hence its weird borders. Maine was lost to the UK in the war of 1812 (a contributing reason to the two countries not reconciling), and the southern border of Canada west of the great lakes was drawn much to the south compared to OTL (the treaty, in the 1860s, was one of the reasons the countries did eventually reconcile, but it lost president Müller his second term). And of course there never was a civil war. Slavery was instead abolished by gradual reform (lots of immigrants from France and Germany and their colonies meant that the voting slave owners eventually came to be outnumbered, and a slightly different rate of innovation in the agricultural field helped make slavery less profitable earlier).

I don't think you should need a translation, as it's not too far removed from OTL modern English. The one thing I should say is that Dotch (Dot-ch, once again German ch-sound) means German, not Dutch. Amerikan is a bit like the people saying American on the US census today: just a mix of mostly European ancestry. It also includes a large amount of people with British (mostly English) ancestry, but because no one wanted to be associated with the British for a large part of the country's history they came to refer to themselves as simply American.

The states aren't really shown by majority in several cases, but rather by plurality, but for a middle school textbook it's close enough. The percentage is based on the census for the whole country, and while there are actually ethnic groups that are larger than the Italians nationally (such as Jews) they are grouped into the other ethnicity category because they don't form the "majority" of any state.

If anyone is interested I could post a pronunciation guide in IPA, as the sounds are a bit different from English.

EDIT: updated map

The 2011 Census results for the Commonwealth of New England have been tabulated, and ethnic data has been made available to the public. This data shows how New England's varied history has created a very diverse population.

The United States of Aziz are a confederation of formerly independent states or newly independent colonies in our South America, this timelines Aziz.

Ming China had several colonies along the west coast by the time Mohammed al-Yamamah first discovers the New World.

Many different types of state are permitted within the United States, though the process is overall recognisably democratic. Republics are ruled by an elected leader, monarchies have a hereditary ruler, while bureaucracies are ruled by a peculiar interpretation of Confucianism.

To the south, and in the interior, lie the four territories. The southernmost is the March, an area of fortifications that is patrolled by soldiers from every state. These are not full members, and no real agreement has been made on how, or even whether, to admit them.

The culture is a vibrant mix of Chinese and Islamic traditions, as well as new Azizi culture. Most people are at least conversant in Arabic and Cantonese. To the north, Mandarin is more common, while to the east, many people speak only Arabic.

The map depicts the state in 1900.

Just a quicky, to make the thread a bit longer.

It's the future, but not our future. Due to some unfortunate political and demographic changes on Earth in the early 2100s, the lunar colonies of the US, the Han Chinese Empire, and the Soviet Community declared their independence (as did the Martian and Asteroid Belt colonies, but that's a whole other story). A generation later, they joined together in a federation and immigration greatly increased...
