Sorry - for some reason I keep thinking that "ethnic group" and "race" are synonymous.

It's tricky, and often controversial.

As an example, you might say "British" is a different ethinic group than "French", but they could be said to be part of the same race (White, or Caucasian, or whatever).
Note of course the difference in race as a classification of humans and race as a biological term, the differences are often sadly blurred.

Anyway, I'm no anthropologist but that's the basic issue. Like I said, probably best not to dwell on it.

So, we still haven't decided on a challenge for the next round. I know we had decided on "A Nation Displaced" a week ago when I mistakenly thought the contest was over. Do people still want to run that challenge, or would you guys prefer another one like "Before and After" or "Wandering Religions"?

I still support A Nation Displaced.

I say Wandering Religions should be called A Faith out of Place, A Religion out of Place, or A Faith Without A Homeland. It has nothing to do with wandering.

Erm, it involves a faith moving from one place to another - "wandering" means to move indirectly or without purpose.

It should be Wandered the Religion or A Faith that Wandered, then. Wandering implies they still are.

The challenge itself was something like: make a map of a religion in an unlikely place, OTL example, the Buddhists in the Russian Caucasus. I can't remember what it was exactly but it was basically that. It said nothing about them still being wanderers, they're just far from where they came from. They were wanderers and they could still be wanderers, but calling it Wandering Religions forces you to have them still be wanderers.

It doesn't force anyone to do anything - it's just the title of the challenge. I think you're reading too much into this.

The Kalmyks, yes.

I did'nt explicitly say they were still moving or not.

Frankly I just chose that title because it sounds good, as 'wandered' IMO is an unaesthetic word.

I support the 'universal challenge' "A People out of Place".

Do you mean the one that's specifically about ethnic groups, or the one that includes ethnic groups, races, languages, governments and cultures? Because I refuse to run the latter.

Just to throw out some older unused ones to liven this up...

An Eternal Indian Summer
World War I never happens, although smaller-scale conflicts still occur. Think Cold War with Habsburgs and uber-Britain.

(Or the US and China vs Britain and the Russians. Or...).

Unified Earth
Showing when nations joined a world-state, or the development of a United Earth.

The Golden Horde in 2010.
(I though we could modify that so it is _any_ Mongol Horde surviving as an good-sized independent state until today: either one of the traditonal Golden, Il-Khans, Chagatai - or the Great Khanate holds onto at least Northern China - or a Khanate which never existed OTL. PODs after Genghis's death.)

Map of a Polynesian Superpower.

In 1813, Napoleon Crowns himself Caesar in Constantinople. Map shows that world in 1920.

The Empires No One Suspected; a Map showing an Empire/Large Nation that no one would have though could happen before it did.

(See, the Caliphate 700 AD from the POV of a Byzantine citizen in 600)

World 1950 after Yellowstone has a mild, but still devastating, eruption in 1897

Atlantropa Rising: Zeerust-world 80 years after the Construction of the Gibraltar Barrier and Sicily-Tunisia Dam (Zeerust-1920s vision of the future)

(This one probably needs to be ASB)

A world map where Australia, Asia and the Middle East are the dominant areas of civilization.
(I would suggest the option of switching out South America and Africa for Australia and Middle East: the one is pretty puny by necessity, and the other overlaps with Asia)

Socialists Rule:
Have a world with 5 Socialist Great Powers in it, certainly most of them are to be Marxism-inspired. At least 3 of them must be in allied against a/several common foe(s), and there must be a respectable non-socialist bloc or two as well

Another one inspired by this suggestion:

Look Upon My Works, Ye Mighty, And Despair

Make a map depicting a successfully built megastructure, either showing the structure itself, its location, or the political or social conditions that caused its construction.

Implausibility in terms of how the megastructure works is allowed. Some historical implausibility will be allowed, but outright impossibility and magic is not. OTL megastructures (e.g. The Great Wall of China) are not allowed, but alternate versions of these structures or expansions on them are. Future history is allowed.
