Sort of both since the Map lacks any context. At the moment it just looks like random names on a map. Rather like this attachment
I'm sure it'll be fine once you post the story.

Rest of the world does it's own thing.

2. A take on "Mars Attacks" (the bubble gum cards, not the movie): Mars blows up on its own, and the surviving Martians, like the Race in the Turtledove book, must make some sort of peace with as-yet unconquered bits of humanity and divide the world.

Situation 2011, both cases.

Which sounds better?

Bruce
1. No question.

I'd suggest 2, since it shows more alien intervention. 1 sounds like it is basically just the type of scenario you would find in the ASB forum only with actual aliens instead of Alien Space Bats. The aliens create a POD and then leave humans to react to it.

I like the idea of the only thing being able to go through being truckloads of turnips.

Is 'Herman' rather than 'German' intentional or a typo?

Quite intentional.
If you look closely you'll also see other jokey names:
The Pictorian Kingdom - Victorian / Pict
The Ernest Republic - they are not Frank
The Boldian States - not quite Italic
The Duchy of Towinne - better Towinne than Toulouse?

Now that is funny. A bit off-topic, perhaps, but funny.

Thank you.
Nice to know I have a fan (ie someone who shares my odd sense of humour ).

Back on topic, there should be more entries to the latest challenge.
I'd be happy with either of Bruce's ideas.

I'd like to try and choose next fortnight's challenge ahead of time instead of scrambling to choose at the last minute like I usually do. With that in mind, there seemed to be some good support for the "Melting Pot" challenge suggestion from a page back - is that the challenge most people want or would you prefer a different suggestion?

It is a good idea and I wholeheartedly support it for the next challenge.

That is a good point. I'm just afraid that the scenario I have is a bit too close to Turtledove's scenario...perhaps I'll do the other map as an extra for the regular map thread, tho', since people seem interested.

What's that massive North German-Scandanavian state? Also what happened to the Iberian peninsual?
