We could use both?

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "both", but if you're referring to the part of my post that says "Make a linguistic map of a region that is dominated by a language or language family which did not exist in OTL, or which did not dominate that region in OTL", then I meant both - the sentence as a whole was one suggestion.

Yes that was what I meant. Is the title good or shall I think of a different one?

I think the name "Those Strange Tongues" is fine.

A map of a language shared by two or more nations, a la Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The nations could be friendly to one another, as in the case of the Germanic nations right now, or they could be opposed, as was the case with East and West Germany. A map of a single nation with two major languages divided on geographical or economic lines, a la Belgium or Switzerland. Or some combination, but certainly with the focus on depicting where the languages are spoken.

We rather need to decide on a challenge for next fortnight. There have been a few good suggestions over the past couple of weeks - are there any suggestions in particular that you guys want to see?
I have issue with the plausibility of the map from a practical point of view, but I certainly don't think it's necessarily ASB, just unlikely. We've had a lot more implausible scenarios before, and mostly without the rich detail that Jman used in the background text.

Those Strange Tongues sounds new and interesting.

A linguistics map challenge?

If it can include future/ASB, I'll be really happy.

Also, I think OTL languages should be allowed. Otherwise, it would be sort of limited.

I'd like to resuggest the one Leistungsfähiger Amerikan (well, technically me) suggested.

I suggest either Natio Vetus, Gloria Nova or Revanche Supreme as the name.

Does not have to be before 1900, but it'll probably require a POD before it.
This is a thread topic Xwarq posted in the pre-1900 board, and I think it could be a cool map idea.

Someone (can't remember who) made a list of them.

Natio Vetus, Gloria Nova sounds good to me too. I think it'd be more fun than a linguistical map.

@Agentdark

Try this.

The Pythean Islands - draw a map of Northwest Europe showing alternate (British) Islands. (i.e there are different geographic islands in the OTL Celtic Sea - North Sea area.

That sounds very difficult to do and make it good-looking.

Not that difficult if you have a good base map.
Plus it would engender some thought behind the TL history

I also add my vote to the Strange Tongues

Suggestions:

THE ABSENT EMPIRE: remove one major Empire from world history, Persia (Achaemenid) onwards. Show the world in 2011 or, if Empire came into existence over 400 years ago, at least 400 years after it's failure to show up.

SOME WORLDWAR OR ANOTHER: show the aftereffects of a failed or only partially successful alien invasion.

ABOVE EARTHLY KINGS: show a world in which the Papacy is a major territorial player, and the answer to "How many divisions does the Pope have?" is "plenty!"

All of these seem very nice to me. However, for the current MoF I still support Natio Vetus, Gloria Nova.

"Natio Vetus, Gloria Nova" and "Those Strange Tongues" both sound good to me, and they both seem to be pretty popular - at this rate it's going to be difficult to choose between them.

They both seem pretty good, I could work with either of them. I've suffered a serious map-makers block these last weeks though

I'm surprised no one's complained that I haven't posted the next round of threads yet!

The voting thread for MotF 34: Dancing with the Devil will be up shortly - unfortunately only three of the four submitted maps are eligible for voting as Jman's map is implausible (I PMed him about this and he has not replied).

The challenge for MotF 35 is going to be "Natio Vetus, Gloria Nova", unless a large enough number of people speak out in favour of another challenge within the next few hours.

And sorry for the delay, I'm disorganised and lazy at the best of times and the past couple of weeks have not exactly been the best of times. Oh well, onward and upward!
