Welcome to the DMZ

dmz.jpg

THE CHALLENGE
Create a map showing a demilitarised zone (DMZ). The DMZ may exist between several nation states, or between several sides in a civil war, or wherever a DMZ might appear. The DMZ may be officially decided upon, or may be an unofficial DMZ come about through an unspoken understanding.

THE RESTRICTIONS
Maps may be from any time after 1700. Maps can be ASB in the "magical fantasy world" or "science fiction" sense, but any map that is not from a world that involves science fiction or fantasy elements and is implausible in terms of its alternate history will not be allowed. Any map that is otherwise just plain ridiculous will not be allowed (sorry to be so vague about this point; I'm just trying to cover all bases. If you're in any doubt, please feel free to PM me.).

This round shall finish on Sunday, 3rd of October.

!THIS THREAD IS FOR POSTING OF ENTRIES ONLY!

Any discussion must take place in the discussion thread. If you post anything other than an entry to the contest here you will be disqualified from competing in this round of the contest.

Remember to vote on the previous round of MoF.

The Levantine Demilitarized Border Areas

This is my entry for the current Map Challenge:

The map depicts an ATL in which a State of Judea and a Federation of Arabic states are divided by means of a DMZ, called Demilitarised Border Areas.

The background info I promised before:

The POD is around 1912-1913 when during the First Balkan War a small uprising in the Hedjaz quizkly spreads out across the Arab lands. The Ottomans are not eager to lose more land and give most Arab provinces a limited amount of independance. These provinces soon organise themselves, most voluntarily and some involuntarily, under Hussein Ibn Ali in a Arab Confederacy which became fully independant in 1928.

After the Grand European War of 1931-1934 a lot of Jewish Europeans decided to emigrate to either the American Federation or to the United Arab States. After decades of population growth among the Jewish civilians in the UAS, the tensions came to a breakpoint in the sixties:
After the largest Jewish terrorist organisation, the Haganah, had mounted a armed civil revolt, which lasted for a year, the Commonwealth of United Nations stepped in and organised a Armistice between the UAS and the most of the Jewish rebel organisations.
Soon the State of Judea declared independance and the volatile situation in the region has lasted till this day. Although occasionally some of the Jewish militant splinter organisations try to provoke reactions from the Commonwealth of Nations peacekeeping forces, the regular Judean forces or regular UAS military, the situation hasn’t escalated yet....... Well, it's not as good, but it seems sad to just have one map for this contest... :(

The Demilitarized Strip was created after the US-brokered Treaty of New Delhi finally ended the off-on border skirmishing between the Third Reich and the Sino-Soviet People's Union, which had threatened to trigger global nuclear war since the SSPU developed it's own bomb in 1960. To prevent border "incidents" the Germans pulled back some miles across territory already Slav-cleansed to minimize infiltration, and starting building fences and laying down mine fields. The Soviets did the same, although along much of the border they had a second line of defense in the rivers.

As of 2010, the Demilitarized Strip forms on of the largest fortified borders in the known Multiverse. Although both sides use defoliants and incendiaries to keep the area near the fences and minefields (or, along the far river bank on the Soviet part) clear of vegetation, near the middle, where both sides are wary to intrude lest they annoy the other, there is the "Green Line", a strip of woodland extending almost unbroken from the Caspian to the Artic Sea. Annoyingly, someone seems to be living in there: long-distance cameras and spy satellites have a number of times picked up what look like raggedly dressed human beings in the woods. Since sending troops would be a provocation to the other side, Germans and Russians often shell the Green Line in a somewhat desultory manner in hopes of driving out the "squatters", with no noticeable effect.

Hopefully I'm not too late.

This map was made quite quickly from one of my own base maps, using ideas I have churning over in my head for quite a while now.

In the Early 2040's the EU has edged towards federalisation so much, that by now, the nations of the EU are gearing up for the European Federation. And the only issue here was Turkey, who had just been admitted. They were not ready yet.

The desicion tore the nation apart. People took to the streets, and torched government buildings. Others fended them off.

And in Istanbul, rioters killed many EU peacekeeping squads, who were not allowed to shoot.

Now the Turkish government had an ever more perilous decision, they could hand over the rebelious murderers for the EU to deal with, and face the wrath of their own citizens, or refuse, and drag this out even longer. They refused. The EU army, created a decade before waited at the Greco/Bulgarian-Turkish border, while the turks done the same. And a few anti EU soldiers charged at the EU ranks, hoping their comrades would follow. Completely against their orders, many did, and the following week the EU marched into Turkey. The better equipped and trained soldiers laid waste to the Turks, and by the following month they were driving them deep into Turkey itself.

Turkey accepted peace from the EU in 2047, a mere month after the start of the war. The bosphorus, from Istanbul to Gallipoli, was ceded to the new-born European Federation. A large strip of land along the border, and right along Turkey's Western coastline was to become demilitarised to help prevent further conflict.

This short war also signaled the begining of the split in relation between the EF and the USA and China.

Here is the map:

I apologize for the quickness and lack of quality in the short TL. My first entry in to the MoF.

It seems so long ago now, but it is a lesson that must be taught. Come, listen, and hear of the falling stars that changed the world.

---

In 2022 Cuba was undergoing rapid change; stubborn communism had given way to a growing market economy. The USA's embargo of the state had ended in 2017, and Cuba was coming to be considered part of the westernised world.

On February 28th a set of falling stars were seen in the night's sky. They appeared to land somewhere in Eastern Cuba, but it quickly became evident that they were not your everyday rocks from space.

For the next couple of days people in the region told of strange noises and sightings of "tall, pale men without faces" in the area. The sightings were numerous, detailed and consistent, even when the person telling it had no idea of any other encounters. Photographs of the creatures and their crashed spaceships confirmed their presence beyond any real doubt soon enough, and the world was shocked.

Television programs all over the world were interrupted by emergency, 24-hour broadcasts covering the astounding events happening in the small, Latin American country. The creatures did not try to hide their presence, and yet the whole of mankind had no idea what to do about them. Eventually a group of linguists, diplomats and experts in speculative forms of extraterrestrial life were sent with a military escort to make the first official contact with the aliens. What happened next is indisputably the most horrendous misunderstanding ever to take place between cultures.

The Antillans, as they were coming to be called - due to the fact that they had made landfall in the Greater Antilles island chain - sent a similar team with armed escort to meet the humans, which they had correctly assumed to be a welcoming envoy looking to make first contact.

The Antillans approached the group carefully, and attempted to signal them to lay down their weapons. The human soldiers didn't understand their signals, and kept their weapons raised. The stand-off lasted a couple of minutes before an Antillan soldier opened fire. Unable to distinguish between soldiers and civilians, the Antillans quickly killed the human envoys.

A twitchy trigger finger had begun what would be the second most damaging conflict the Antillans had ever faced.

Military units were ordered to disable and capture the outnumber Antillans, but the Antillans' technology gave them a significant advantage, and they quickly dispatched the immediate military threat.

The Antillans refused to lay down their arms and explain the misunderstanding, fearing that the humans would kill them all or subjugate them. A strategy was formed to take over the island of Cuba in order to prove themselves as an equal threat to the human race as they were to them, so that they could negotiate a favourable peace.

The Antillans moved quickly, and US Marines landing near Guantanamo Bay Naval Base were obliterated by their superior technology.

Believing the aliens to be invaders a huge coalition of nations was formed in order to combat the alien threat. Though various nations such as China and India were included in the Coalition, only those nations with forces in the area were able to respond to the conflict before it was over.

Soldiers from a small group of countries, primarily the USA, Britain, Canada and France, began landing and taking up positions in central Cuba. The Antillan forces used their advanced mobility to their advantage and were able to attack the defending forces near the town of Camalote before they were fully prepared.

The remnants of the Coalition forces met up with reinforcements in the Cuban province of Ciego de Avila. The Coalition dug in and used whatever information they had to give their soldiers a crash course in anti-Antillan tactics. Their defences were still compromised, but the number of Antillan casualties was much higher than in any previous battle.

Shortly after the battle Coalition forces captured a group of Antillans who willingly surrendered their weapons to the humans. It wasn't until after the conflict was over that they knew why.

The Antillan forces attacked further into Cuba, trying to prevent their forces from losing momentum, but the fact that they had an extremely limited number of armed personnel, and the fact that the facilities needed to support them didn't exist, began to have a severely detrimental effect on their forces. At Sancti Spiritus the Antillans fell back after losing around half their attacking force; the first victory the Coalition won, and the final battle of the conflict.

The Antillans retreated and dug in to the territory in central Cuba, whilst the Coalition attempted to form a strategy appropriate to the situation. The world watched as two armies stared at each other across a stretch of war torn Earth.

The Antillans broke the silence. They broadcast a loud message in their language across at the Coalition forces, alongside a shorter message using what they had come to know of human languages. The original message was in Cuban Spanish, but in English it translated roughly as "Sorry. Peace?".

What had happened was this:

The Antillans had been a young, spacefaring civilisation some hundreds of lightyears away that had been embroiled in a war with a much older and more powerful civilisation. Before they were all wiped out by the rapidly advancing enemy forces they sent several generational ships out in order to seed their species on a new planet, so that they might begin anew in safer environs.

It had been hundreds of years since they left their homeworld, and none of the original members of the ships' crew and passengers lived, only their children and grandchildren did. It seemed as though they would hopelessly wander space forever, until the ships' automated systems picked up evidence of a habitable planet - Earth.

Their landing had been mostly automated and they had little time to learn about humans before hand and make a more controlled first contact, so they landed wherever the ships' systems took them, and tried to make peaceful contact with the primitive rulers of this new world.

The fact that they were there to start a new life for their species was one that weighed heavily on their minds, and the Antillan who had opened fire at their first meeting had done so in the fear that humans would subjugate them and stunt their growth as a species. This was the view shared by their leader at the time, who came to become known to Antillans as "The Great Betrayer". At the time their leader gave up on any chance of a peaceful reconciliation with the humans, and gave orders to begin military action against them.

When the Antillans won their pyrrhic victory at the Battle of Ciro Redondo, many began doubting their leader's abilities, and saw that such blatant war-making was going to damage their species more than talking to the humans. This was the reason for the defections that happened soon after.

Such defections are normal in Antillan society, which is structured around generational social groups wherein every person knows every other person, and who tend to make decisions as a group, including pursuing similar careers and living together. These groups are permitted to defect from under one authority to live under another at any time; they only submit to an authority as long as they agree with it (or agree with it more than any other authority). The defections that took place actually consisted of two, whole social groups (the Antillan term for which is generally translated as "cadre").

The Antillan defeat at Sancti Spiritus was the last straw for many Antillans, and a popular shift in leadership took place, replacing The Great Betrayer with a leader who would later become commonly known as The Builder. The message broadcast in the Antillan language that was played alongside their offer of peace was directed at the defected Antillans. It explained the situation, and informed them to work with the humans that they might understand one another's languages and act as translators. The soldiers that had defected became known as The Mediators to later Antillans, many of which took pride in being descended from The Mediators.

After some time the Antillan language had been sufficiently deciphered, and the first controlled contact between the races took place. No final solution to the problem of the Antillan Nomads' desire for a new home could be found at the time, but certain things were agreed upon: Firstly that demilitarised zone was to be set up in central Cuba, and secondly that The Great Betrayer were to be tried at a sui generis court of both humans and Antillans in order to try him for war crimes.

Now, hundreds of years later, humans and Antillans have come to live together as equals, and together they are exploring the stars.

Breteyne was defeated, her penetration south into Wessex ended with the entrance of Grand Normandy into the war. Her seven southern counties were returned to Wessex, and the new border counties were demilitarised under the joint administration of the Bishop of Ely and the Grand Duke of Suffolk. Peace has returned to the island of Breteyne, but for how long? Breteyne is still powerful, stretching from Cambridge in the south to the Orkney islands in the north. Should Grand Normandy be distracted by the House of Montfort or its other rivals, Breteyne could once again turn south.

Korean Demilitarized Zone

Alright, here I go, just in time!

The History of the Korean Demilitarized Zone:

After the Battle of Khalkin Gol in August of 1939, the Soviet forces under General Zhukov invaded Manchuria, which was at the time controlled by the Great Manchu Empire, a Japanese puppet state. By September 3 they had captured everything north and east of Harbin, and were only miles away from the city itself. On September 20 they captured Hsinking, the capital of the Manchu Empire. Aisinggioro Puyi, Emperor Kangde of the Manchu, had to flee to Keijo, where he took up quarters at the former Korean Imperial Palace. By October 14 the Soviets had overrun all of Manchuria and the portions of Inner Mongolia still controlled by the Japanese.

The Japanese, desperate to keep most of their army fighting the Chinese, sued for terms on October 16, asking for a status quo ante bellum. The Soviets refused, and began rounding up their army along the northern Korean border, preparing to invade. The shocked Japanese decided to once again seek terms, now prepared to agree to anything the Soviets wanted, bar any main Japanese land. Japanese and Soviet delegations met in the Russian border town of Vladivostok to negotiate, and the Soviets immediately demanded the cession of all occupied lands, the establishment of a demilitarized zone in northern Korea, and the payment of massive war reparations (383,000,000 rubles or 1,170,000,000,000 yen). The Japanese protested heavily, but later they reluctantly agreed, on the condition that they were allowed to keep the Kwantung Leased Territory, as well as be allowed to continue invading China. The Soviets agreed to these terms, and the area informally known as the Korean Demilitarized Zone was established.

After the Second World War the Soviet Union was not allowed to gain any more land in Europe than it had already secured for itself, except the Polish Borderlands, the eastern third of Finland, and Southern Italy with Sicily, which became the Socialist Republic of the Sicilies. This was due to the other European powers being weary of Soviet Communism. The Soviets were enraged by this, despite having recieved every former colony in Asia (except for Indonesia, which the Dutch kept, the Arab nations south of Saudi Arabia, which were gobbled up by the latter). They and their socialist allies severed almost all ties to the Pact of Blood, and so began the Cold War.

During the Cold War the Red Army was heavily strangthened, especially in Manchuria. The Japanese were weary of this, and so they strengthened their army contingents in Korea as well. After the Workers and Peasants' Uprising in the Empire of Shina, a Japanese puppet state in southern China, led to the Japanese loss of control over mainland China, and to the cession of those lands to the Workers' Republic of China, the Japanese started to make experiments in democracy, and granted autonomy to Formosa and Korea. The Red Army, despite the weakened Japanese influence over the area, did not decrease military deployments to Manchuria, for China had sided with India in the Indo-Soviet Split, and were now treated as devils by the Soviet propaganda press. And who could decrease military readiness against a nation of devils with a clear concience?

In 1987 the Campanian Curtain fell, and in 1992 Manchuria proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union. They immediately asked for Puyi's only surviving brother Puren to take their as-of-yet unbuilt throne, and opened up good relations with Japan, establishing a similar constitutional monarchy as Russia and Japan. The Japanese felt the KDMZ would no longer be needed, and so removed it.

POD: Saladin dies as an infant and Jerusalem never fell (permanently).
The almost constant fighting leads to a more conservative and catholic Europe.

In 2004 local riots erupt into a full scale war. A Fedayn army backed by the Arab princes invades the Holy Land.
The Monastic Orders, since their reorganisation through "Saint Napoleon of Ajeco", the main defensiv force in the lands of the Bible, are overrun and retreat to the coast.

The Pope calls for a crusade to reconquer Jerusalem (it's crusade number 17). Several European nations respond.

After the crusader forces encircle the old town of Jerusalem the commanders Gen. Jasir Arafat and FM. Felipe d'Asturias sign a chease fire to prevent damaging of the holy places.

Diplomats jump on the opportunity and peace talks are held in Oslo.
Until they are over the DMZ shown below is in effect.
